Problem turning knobs(using the mouse)

I have always had a problem turning knobs in Sonar, I wonder if other users share that experience!
Right now, I'm trying to turn the knobs in the prochannel, but the results are always completely unpredictable!
Sometimes it will move slow, othertimes fast - and moving it backwards will make it jump all the way back, even if shift was hold down.
Do people just use 'type in' of the number they want, or external control and just forget about using the mouse?
Right now(in the prochannel), you can use the mouse wheel to turn a knob when holding down the left mouse button, and this will ALSO(at the same time) move the whole prochannel up or down, then when the prochannel can't be moved up or down, suddenly the slider can't be turned either, does this make sense?  Even worse in the console view, there the mouse wheel will function differently depending on the cursor placement on the screen - if the cursor is on top of a knob it will change functionality and start turning the knob instead of moving the screen up or down! This kind of mapping is just violating all principles of intuitive GUI design(one function per control).
I would just like to know if the function of the knobs and sliders in relation to the mouse will be 'fixed'(made more intuitive) or if it will stay like this. And is there an overall idea behind it or was it just random design?
Also the mouse works completely different turning knobs in VST plugins, it would be nice with an overall intuitive standard.

Actually just realized that it must be a bug - turning the knobs in the console view seem to work fine - then prochannel adjustment is just not working properly in the track view! In any case, the mapping seems to be different!

When you have this problem, are any VSTs open at the same time?

I ask, because I have a similar strange behavior with GUI sliders in Sonar when AD1 is open.

No vsts are open now. In general I'm just annoyed when knobs and sliders don't follow the same standard - also I just noticed that in the console view, the knobs and sliders in the prochannel will not move when using the mouse wheel in the same way that the knobs and sliders in the console itself(just next to the prochannel).
Also I don't believe moving knobs and sliders is an undo-able action yet?? With the new ctrl feauture(changing all sliders at the same time) it would be nice if such a global change would be undo-able.

It's not undo-able but if you right click a control you should be able to select "Revert to nn.n"

nn.n = your last setting

no turning knobs in general, doesnt always work. Still trying to figure out when it does and when it does not. The behavior of knobs in relation to moving the mouse seems totally unpredictable!

Right now turning the 'drive' knob on the console emulator on the prochannel works perfect, but turning any knob on the eq or compressor is almost impossible! completely unpredictable behavior. I'm surprised I seem to be the only one with these issues?!

If I use the mouse scroll wheel to turn one of those knobs on the prochannel, it also scrolls the whole prochannel at the same time - and when the prochannel cant be scrolled anymore, the knob cant be turned anymore?!

Just out of curiosity, what mouse motion are you using to "turn" the knobs?

doesnt matter what motion I use, Ive tried them all, no matter what the behavior of some knobs are completely unpredictable. Like I wrote, only some knobs. But at least tell me that your prochannel is scrolling on turning knobs simultaneously? I doubt I can be the only one with that bug?

My knobs don't move with the mouse wheel either.  Of course, why would I want to move knobs with the wheel?

Left-click, hold, and slide up or down for coarse settings.
Hold the Shift key when you do this to get fine settings.

This works for me perfectly all the time:
1]Left mouse click on a knob or slider
2]The selected item shows a shading around it.
3]Using the mouse scroll wheel moves the selection. The knob CW/CCW; The sliders Up/Down.
4]Use the keyboard's +/- keys for fine movement.
I launched a series of VST's to see if this action is similar. Some does, others only acted by clicking on the knob and click hold-drag the mouse act.

Maybe a problem with your mouse or the Project Template.....

SimplemanZ:  The OP was having problems moving knobs in Prochannel, I assume not elsewhere.  I cannot move Prochannel knobs with the wheel; however, I can move all the other knobs with the wheel outside of Prochannel.  Both my keyboard and mouse are hardwired, no wireless junk.

To avoid frustration, I simply use what works everywhere (the mouse act).  Not being able to make my hands play the bassline that is inside my head correctly is frustration enough!!

Re: Problem turning knobs(using the mouse) 2015/02/03 03:32:39 (permalink)
I finally figured it out - the buggy behavior appears when I have larger screen settings - high resolution but big icons and text etc.. .because I'm on a laptop and never liked this small text that you get with HD screens!
SO, if your stuff cant fit the windows because of resolution you might experience funky behavior of knobs and sliders!
So now I'll just stay with the large icon setting even if I don't like it..
Yeah, I would prefer to just use left mouse button when moving knobs and sliders, like on most apps.
