really need help colors-visibility

Well, not just Plat, must be something I did way back . I hope I can explain because I cannot get a pict to post at all.
 
In Track view-all tracks and track folders minimized. I cannot see the + sign very well on the track folders. So, all the way on the left is that little vertical bar. If I click on that and click the x in the default (left) box all is well. Nice.
 
But, for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get this to be the default for Sonar, be it X3e or now Platinum.
 
I have tried and tried in the prefs , no luck. I have clicked on every default in the color preference dialog area.
 
One at a time just nodoes not cut it and I know it's me and there is a way
