Needing some info on compressions, distortions and other plugins.

Other than the Cakewalk FAQ, are there any specific sites or blogs that explains in details about using FX plugins like compressions, distortions and delays? 

Caveat: I own none of these plugins...

This site has some really great videos for explaining how various fx can be used. They'll make you drool for their versions, but other versions do the same thing.
 
There are tons of great videos you can buy from Sonar. I think I've watched them all.
 
Craig Anderton has a book on Sonar for Guitar, which is a little dated but still cool.
 
Of course, the Sonar Power books deserve a mention.

I have 2 as hard copy (Sonar 7 and Sonar X1 maybe?) and since I've been using my Safari Books Online subscription to read and search them.

There are plenty of good videos on the Cakewalk blog site etc.  Some good stuff.  Basic, but then that is what you are talking about.  Groove3 has great "how to" videos that are more in depth.  Sound on Sound has plenty of free articles on line - it is just the stuff in the last 2 months that is restricted.  But a subscription to them is worthwhile if expensive.  Tape Op doesn't do any "how to" articles but is good stuff, too and the price is right - free.
 
Effects of all kinds are cool, but the icing on the cake - not the cake itself.  I'd worry more about the basics of recording and mixing before I start in on the gravy.

Soundonsound - I strongly recommend this if you're just starting out (and even if you're not). It explains almost anything and everything regarding audio. You will definitely not regret spending time there. It is a really, really well-rounded source of information for all things audio/music production and it's free. They also have a magazine which is also great and they regularly post articles from the magazines.
 
There is so much information out there and I think a resource like this could definitely help you because it compiles so much information into one location. It will save you time and also keep you away from all of the distractions.

Thanks Paul P. relentless 1, that's only some of the compression articles. I imagine you will have fun and save money and learn a lot by using that site.
 
Someone mentioned Groove3, that's a good resource too. There is also MacProVideo, the Recording Revolution, and the Pro Audio Files. Those are all worth checking out, the only reason I mentioned SoundonSound was because it's free and it compiles a lot of information which proves to be really beneficial.
