Mid-Side techniques for all plugins

Been watching the "Into the Lair" series on Youtube and was fascinated by his use of MS to open up space for instruments, as in cut the lows in the mid-channel of a submix so the kick and bass sit well.  Cool.  So I looked for a post on this, and there was none, so thought I'd share:

1.  Go get Voxengo's MSED ->-freeware-<- VST.
2.  Put it on the track or mix you want to mess with. Put MSED's "Mode" to Encode.
3.  Bounce that track to Split Mono (normally right would be one mono side of the stereo track and left the other ... but now one is Mid and the other is Side)
4.  Route both of these new tracks to a new bus and put MSED on it and set "mode" to Decode.  If you solo this bus you will hear your reconstructed stereo track just like it was before you bounced it.

Now you can go to your bounced Mid and Side tracks (that sum into the Bus) and put different EQ, compression, whatever on the Mid and Side channels INDIVIDUALLY.  You can solo either one to hear what you are doing mid-side-wise, and use the bus to hear what you have done in stereo-world.

    This can also be done in real time without the bounce and using Channel Tools. I have this set up in my mixing template to save on the set up.

    1. Insert three busses, one called "M/S SPLIT", one "MID" the other "SIDE".
    2. Put channel tools into both the MID and SIDE FX racks or Pro Channel if preferred. Th important thing is for any separate M/S processing it needs to be before the processors that you want to use on the separate streams.
    3. On the MID buss channel tools reduce "Side Gain" to minus infinity
    4. On the SIDE buss channel tools reduce "Mid gain" to minus infinity
    5. Set the "M/S SPLIT" output to none and insert two sends one to MID the other SIDE
    6. Change any track/buss outputs you want to process to "M/S Split"

    You now have one buss with only "MID" info and the other with only "Side" info and can now use processors on each buss to process each channel as required. No need to re-encode as that is done when the two outputs are summed at the master buss (or whatever buss the MID & SIDE output to).

    Obviously the input material needs to be stereo.....
