praise of a good feature in X3 - track control manager

My bad for not finding this before, but the thing called "track control manager", hidden under the button that defaults to "custom" or allows "all", "custom", "mix", "fx" , "io" is a great feature.   Finally able to select those things that matter to ME in viewing a track of a certain kind.

I like it too, but it's confusing that it doesn't start with the "all" setting enabled.

Agreed (I guess they didn't want to frighten newbies by doing this, however it actually confuses them). There is an easy workaround. Just start a new project with the default template, change the setting, then save it as the default template. That's it.
