first attempt to record a tune from scratch. Suggestions appreciated!

Pretty simple stuff compared to what I hear from folks on this board, but if anyone has comments or critiques...

I like it, Ward. It's not complicated, but it's genuine.
3 AM. Thoughts racing through your head. And you can't sleep, but how you wish you could.
Waiting for the dawn that never seems to come.
You have captured a vibe here, a disturbing but familiar place.
I've listened to this several times. it's oddly captivating, and a fine first effort.
    Mix has a nice balance.
    Heck, it's just nicely done.

Not bad. Keep it up and you'll be making better songs sooner than you think. There was a period when I used to play guitar too. Too bad I tried to become a good shredder instead of making songs.

This is great - genuine, heartfelt, good vibe and a bit depressing! I think your voice is engaging with a good rough edge to it. I am no expert, but i think the hi hat is a bit off putting. That aside, good stuff.

yea man...I really love this tune. great job and in fact the spareness has great appeal (for me at least). I wouldn't change a thing. I do think this would fit great on an LP...but I'd plop it between to tunes that moved a bit better (faster)...

    I love it! Great job!

Really appreciate the support, folks. Marshall, I'll take a look at the hi hat. Thanks for the feedback.

Funny, I've never wanted to be a singer, and sure never thought of myself as having singer potential. I just do it because there's nobody else at home to hear me. But hey, it's my life, eh? If I'm going to write about it I should probably be the one to sing about it. Sure feels weird though, making noises come out of your mouth and then making other people listen to them.

Again, I really appreciate the encouragement.

Thanks Larry! Yes, that was a real fiddle player, but it was my brother, not me. That was recorded in 1990 or so, and he was still pretty new on the fiddle (we both fell hard for guitars in our youths), but he has stuck with it and is now quite the Irish fiddle guru. His stockpile of fiddle tunes that he has in his head is just awe-inspiring to me.

I'll pass on your kind words to him.

Very marketable, even. Your voice tells a story like the perfect voices can't. Paraphrasing David Byrne here, the more perfect the voice, the less believable the singer. I think your voice is completely good enough for this sort of thing, but more importantly, I believe the story you are telling.

    That said,

please don't subject your appreciative audience to just two chords. Where's that confounded bridge? After one of your "f" chords, why not hang on a "g" for a while, then go back to what you were doing with the two chord two step. I think you need a chorus or bridge, and it should be really simple, too, but just sayin' . . . I know others will disagree . . .

a great song, man, and well sung.

    -Tom

I do disagree with Tom above , I think the two-chord approach is perfect, it becomes mesmerising and I was completely hooked by this song. Love the lyrics, love the way you very slowly built things up and held the backing vocals off until right at the end. Fantastic.

Bruce Springsteen once made a 2 chord song, the Born in the Usa anthem, at least I think there was just 2 chords.

Yes, I may have "stepped in it" a little here. There will always be listeners who dig just two chords, which is a matter of preference and therefore not really subject to comment on my part, when I say "please don't subject your listeners to just two chords" - that's pretty harsh of me, sorry.

Except that, "Born in the USA" has two, while "Comfortably Numb" has like 12, and which one would you rather listen to in an elevator?  :)

Your song is pretty excellent the way it is, I hope more people get to hear it.

    thanks,
    -Tom

Hey Tom, no offense taken and no apology needed! I'm just really gassed up that folks have responded so positively, you included. I took your comments in the most constructive way possible. One day I aspire to write a three chord tune (and in the mean time I guess I'll just take the stairs).

I liked it..  As others stated, it has a genuine and honest feel and performance.   Simple but effective.

Now if it were me...  I might think about replacing the hihat rhythm with a snare drum at some point for an almost slow and deliberate "battle" type thing.   Just a thought...   Otherwise, there's not much I would change.
