Which soft synths are you using?
This may be a shot in the dark but I do know that some synths (ie Garritan Personal Orch, Cinematic Strings 2) use CC1 mod wheel and if "zero controllers on playback" is not unchecked in prefs sometimes there will be no sound until moving the mod wheel again.

Does the PC go to sleep or some power saving mode? Maybe a background process is firing.

If you are using a USB-connected audio interface, the default setting in Windows Power Management Advanced Options for something called USB Selective Suspend is 'Enabled', and this means that unless that setting is changed to Disabled, Windows will nuke USB-connected devices, such as midi controllers or an audio interface, and when this happens it can jazz things up.

Whenever I load up Windows on a new or reloaded computer, I always set the Power Management options to the High Performance plan, then further go into Advanced Settings and explicitly set USB-Selective Suspend to 'Disabled' and apply it or click OK back out.

Just a thought,

I think Bob has your answer Martin if you are indeed using the default settings.
The zero controller thing I suggested would show up anytime...not just when the PC is inactive for a while.

Sorry, Martin - I hadn't realized your configuration.

Is it possible that your hard drive is set to turn off after some period of time?  It has been 10+ years since I have dealt with any devices going to sleep, but I seem to recall the possiblity the hard drive could turn off, but the rest of the display and PC not actually go into sleep mode?

It just seems so consistent with something along those lines that I want to make sure no chance of that is possible on your system.

If there is a chance you overlooked something it may be covered here regarding power management for XP http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/BC//bcs4p5.html
