keystroke real time trigger

Is there any way to make a keystroke record something real time?

What I mean is this..

Let's say I'm playing back a song and want to record a cowbell in time with the song on a track. Is there a way to map the space bar to a cowbell, play back the song, hit the space bar in time with the song and record that on a track?

I know I can connect up a midi instrument and do it or mic up a cowbell and record it, but that requires an audio or midi interface. I do a lot of work "on the road" where I'm in a plane or airport lobby and want to work on something. It would be convenient if I could record midi notes via my keyboard for certain instances. I know I can do it via step record, but it would be more convenient if I could listen and hit the space bar in real time to insert a cowbell or tambourine or lots of other little pieces.

Thanks, gbow

SONAR does not record audio directly from soft synths. SONAR does not have a virtual MIDI controller but there are free solutions available. I posted one solution here http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2991556.

Excellent scook, I'm looking at that now and will give it a try.

You can use a vst recorder to record audio from a soft synth.  There are free ones.
