First haircut in 39 years

Yesterday, I had my first store-bought haircut in 39 years.

Looking in the mirror I realized that I was overdue for a trim, but I didn't even know where to go get one. So I began a systematic barbershop-selection process: I walked into the first one I saw.

It was a very nice Vietnamese lady who charged me twenty bucks and even trimmed my eyebrows. The back of my neck is cold now, but I'll appreciate it when I'm in the Philippines in a couple weeks.

I may even do this again in a couple months.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I always freak out when they trim my eyebrows. They never used to do that when I was younger.

2 months is just enough time to prepare your small talk for the next cut IMO.

Yep, the first time it was suggested it was like a hammer blow. These days it just normal, part of getting old.

What do you think the charge for a trim on a Wookiee would be that has not had a trim since 1996

Eyebrows.... ?   Yep...and the ear hairs too... both inside and out.

I use a beard trimmer to keep my chin whiskers in some semblance of an orderly fashion with the guard set as close as it goes....... while I'm at it, I get the eyebrows too, double checking that I still have that guard in place, because I do remove it to shave the neck..... It's a decent trimmer and slices right through all the hair with ease so if I forget...and so far I HAVE NOT, it would take several weeks to recover from that one second swipe.

I'd never do that eyebrow trimming thingy......I'm not old, but old fashioned and like the natural look. Ever since I bought my own clippers (7 years ago), I've saved a LOT of money from going to barbershops (I do my own haircuts every 3 weeks).

I also cut my little boy's hair.......great investment.

I stopped going to those places and we're all happier as a result. I used to go the local cheap haircut establishments to be mistreated. I'd go in, watch each of the ladies attempt to choke down their bile at the thought of touching my head, and wait until the loser got stuck with me. I'd try not to react as she attempted to grasp the full impact of the horror that awaited her. "That's so gross..." I frequently heard that whispered. She'd ask me how I wanted it cut and I'd say something helpful like, "Cousin It", "Nasal Comb Over", or "I want it all in a single dreadlock. " She'd pop her gum and consider the life choices that brought her to this bitter end. Finally, she'd slap the clippers against my head and spend 40-50 seconds cutting the little bit of hair that stubbornly clung to my scalp. I usually ended up with a few cuts when she'd make sure to gouge my skin to teach me a lesson. I'd pay somewhere between $12-$15 dollars for the privilege of enjoying her service. Since I'd come back a few months later, they started raising their prices in self-defense. I decided that even though I'm not a trained professional, I could insult and ridicule myself almost as well. I bought my own shearing kit and started cutting my own hair.

Every now and then, my wife asks me if I want to go to one of those places and get a good haircut. I just straighten the nasal hair bow on the top of my head and say, "No, I've still got plenty of material."

Well for me apart from occasional trim 6 years. Now it is short damn it. I had a ring on the doorbell.. Some friends came in with a strange bloke. Later they told me he was a hairdresser. Before I knew it I was in the kitchen and the SOB was cutting my hair... It's gone damnit!

I'm off to the Philippines on the 1st.

I've been there in March a few times and each time swore "never again". In January it's quite pleasant, with temperatures in the 70's. But by March it's frickin' hot, very much like summer in Florida. Hot and muggy.

Consequently, we'll be at the beach a lot. I've put on 10 lbs since November, so I'll be reminding myself that over there fat people are assumed to be wealthy and successful. I'll tell myself I do not look like a beached whale, I look like a wealthy and successful beached whale.

Today, though, I'm walking around with a stocking cap on and a hooded sweatshirt pulled up - indoors - and the back of my neck is still cold. Next month, I'll be thinking of those poor saps in New England still digging out of the snow. Next month, I'll be congratulating myself for having the foresight to cut my hair, perhaps even contemplating a full shave.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Hi,

You're not a hippy anymore?

Wow, I thought we all wanted to hold on to something from that time! Hair is not an issue for me ... I keep it down to almost nothing!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

For the last decade or so I have gotten a haircut every four of five months. I usually get a buzz with a #1 or #2 then when it starts to stick up (I don't have enough left on top to hold it down) or the back starts to bother me when I go to bed... I go get another buzz. However, last year, maybe two, I started to shave my head about twice a week. Last year when it was cold I missed the hair in the back so last August or so I started to let it grow. I now have my winter coat. I'll probably shave it again in the spring but I'm torn between the crazy old hippie/bum look or the shaved head thing. I cut my own eyebrows with a comb and scissors, I pluck my nose and ear hairs. Why does hair start to grow out of your ears and nose when you get older? I don't remember my eyebrows ever needing to be trimmed when I was young either. Maybe I'll shave my eyebrows too... heh. Then I can use mascara and put me some McCartney eyebrows on!

Just cut what's left of mine. I have one of those circular 'roll it around your head' thingummy jigs. No. 2 setting, 15 mins, and that's that for another month or so.

If I leave it, it starts to grow upwards on top at both sides, but not in the middle, so I start resembling a wizened 'Wolverine' from X-Men

If I was going to paint on eyebrows, I would definitely put on more than two and they would not all be right side up. I might go even farther and paint another face on the top of my head. That one would wear painted sunglasses, of course. I'm not cruel.

When I was in the Air Force, about 30 years ago, one of my buddies got yelled at for his hair cut not being in compliance.

Soooooo, he went over and got his head completely shaved, AND had them literally shave his eye brows completely off, as well.

I don't recall much of what else happened to my friend, but I do recall him butting heads with the same staff sergeant for a long time after...
