Issues getting remote sl to work

anyone have any input as to how to get the novation remote sl (not the mark 2) to work as a control surface? I can get the keyboard to function but I can't get any of the control stuff working. Here's what I did so far.

There is actually a tutorial written on how to get this done and I followed it but nothing seems to be working.

Here is the way it's set up:

Under preferences in the control surfaces, I set up a "generic cakewalk control surface". The midi in and midi out are both remote SL1.

Under the "generic cakewalk control surface" preferences, I loaded up the remote sl template that is on the novation website.

The midi in and midi out of my template editor for the remote sl are both "remote sl"

So wtf is going on? Anyone else have this working or remember how they had theirs setup at one point?
