Old new bug - file size growing

With the latest platinum I still have the horrible bug of the file size growing everything I save it. First version: 6Mb, Second version: 12Mb, Third version: 381Mb?!
I seem to get this bug consistently every time I have clips with Audiosnap enabled.

Just to clarify: the size of your project file is growing each time you save it even though you're not adding any more content to the project? So, nothing is changing within the project itself, but the file keeps getting larger?

Yes exactly - no changes - just save and project size grows like no tomorrow.

That is very strange. I'm sorry, but I don't have any ideas. Someone will hopefully chime in that can help you out :)

it might be a tech support kind of question? I've heard of the problem before but haven't a clue what the fix is.

Are you splitting a lot of tracks at transients? This creates a ton of slip-edited clips that SONAR has to keep track of. It shouldn't make the project size continually increase, but there might be something related. Maybe a combination of clip FX and splitting at transients?

Maybe some AudioSnap corruption? Any chance you can make the project available to us?

Yes, please send us something that demonstrates the issue.  I'm not able to repro here with edits and multiple saves (closing, reopening in between as well as keeping open and simply saving over again)

I've been having this same issue with Sonar Platinum on a large project I'm working. The audio files are imported from a live concert with a 40 piece orchestra, so each track starts at 1GB.  I don't do much clip editing, almost no cuts, mainly clip gain adjustments, and grouping instruments by kind (violins, cellos) which feed their subs (strings) but Sonar keeps picking on a few tracks for no apparent reason and swelling the size of the audio until it crashes Sonar when it tries to draw the audio image.  I've seen these 1GB audio files grow to 12GB!! This is an insane problem and even after at least a dozen crash reports sent, CW hasn't even replied to me.  Worthless.  I only have another week to finish this mix and I've wasted at least two weeks fighting this bug.  This is a serious fault and incredibly stupid for a DAW to be doing.  Honestly, this level of software failure makes me question my choice.  ProTools is looking better all the time.

    A couple things...

If you bounced the clip gain adjustments, that will make additional files for undo. But I think part of the answer might be this: "until it crashes Sonar when it tries to draw the audio image."

Under Preferences > Audio > Configuration file, look for the entry for the PicCacheMB. I doubt the default is set up to handle the kind of project you're doing. Increase it, and see if that stops the crashing.

Next, create a new folder. Save As... to it, and check both "Copy All Audio with Project" and "Create One File Per Clip." See if that slims down the size.

If neither of these help, Save As... as a bundle file, then re-open it and re-save to a separate folder. Open the project and see if all is well or not.

As to support, sending crash reports will not necessarily trigger a response from support. I think the crash reports go to QA and dev, not support. Give support a call; by and large people on the forum give them pretty high grades for fixing things.

I also did some classical projects with very long files and didn't run into the problems you did, so hopefully it's something simple.

This last issue is not related to the original, which was about project files growing, not audio files. If the problem needs further troubleshooting, it should be taken to a new thread.

Sorry to the hall monitor. Subject line said "file size growing" so I didn't think it was about just one particular file. Won't bother you again.

I don't think you're being chastised. The problemis that if an additional issue is raised in a thread, it often won't get answered once the original issue is solved, hence the recommendation to start a separate thread.

Also, people tend to respond to the initial post, and/or not notice that its a resurrected thread. This just gets to be confusing to everyone and delays getting to the correct solution for the new issue.

No big deal, and the mistaken assumption is understandable given that original post didn't make clear that the issue was with project files.

    Cheers,
    Dave
