Scarlett 2i4 Inputs/Outputs
Hi, The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 has 2 inputs and 4 outputs. In Sonar X3 Producer it only shows me 1 input and 2 outputs in the audio device setup in preference menu. It appears Sonar treats them as a stereo pair. I have no issues recording since I get the option of left, right or stereo as inputs. Does this sound correct? What is hanging me up is I'm trying to use the external insert plugin so I can use an external compressor. The external insert plugin requires you to have an available (not already assigned in sonar) input and output port to assign to it . Since Sonar only shows that I have 1 input, I don't have the 2nd one to dedicate/assign to the external plugin. I think this means I need an interface with more inputs than than the 2i4 but i want to make sure I am understanding this correctly. Thanks for any help.

It shows 2 ins and outs. Its listed somewhat like this: 1 left stereo = Input 1 1 right stereo = Input 2 Each input is mono, not stereo as you stated CJ

On the track input you have 3 options: left, right or stereo. I get that. What I am referring to is the preferences section. It only shows 1 input there which is why I stated it seems Sonar is treating it as an input pair. I have attached a screenshot of what I am talking about. I would like for it to show both inputs separately. " />

Is there also a mixer for the interface. I have the focusrite saffire pro 24 DSP and there is also a mixer with this interface. Maybe your mixer is setup for stereo. Just a guess.

Hi, thanks for the idea. There is no mixer interface for the 2i4. A utility to change the buffer setting is the only thing that can be modified. Here is how mine looks in Windows " /> cowboydan Is there also a mixer for the interface. I have the focusrite saffire pro 24 DSP and there is also a mixer with this interface. They also have a tutorial on the site. You can click on the video and in the video you can click for the tutorial. Maybe that will help.

I'm pretty sure that is indeed the case. The external insert wants to see stereo I/O. If the only available I/O is already assigned within SONAR, the external insert will not be able to use it. The only workaround I can think of (haven't tried it, though) is to use WDM and aggregate the Saffire with your internal sound capabilities. Assign SONAR's audio to the internal sound card, and use the Saffire for the external insert. UPDATE: I just tried this with MME drivers and the TASCAM US-2x2, which has 2 ins and 2 outs, and it worked.

You cannot switch to WDM or MME with my scarlett 6i6. It will run the WDM test after switching but when you hit apply it tells you that that mode is not supported by the driver.

I would check on Focusrite to see if new drivers have been released for the Scarlett. They had a beta version 3.1.10 out for Windows in October stating the following: - Adds 1-channel WDM formats - Adds multi-channel WDM formats - Adds 24-bit WDM support That may help.
Cakewalk by BandLab | Sonar Platinum | Gigabyte Z370 AORUS GAMING 7-OP | Intel Core i7 8086k CPU | 16 GB Memory | NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 | Windows 10 Pro 64-bit | Focusrite Forte

I just checked and for mine it's still the same 1.8 driver which came out a long time ago. Each model has different drivers and different numbers. As example the 2i2 and 2i4 driver is 2.5.1. Windows only. Mac seems to not need a driver. I see the rest of the series might share my driver as it has the same history and links to 1.8 and 1.6.1 for XP. There is a driver for Mac. 3.4 will be for the Saffire series. And 3.1 would be for the Scarlett solo I guess. I have absolutely no desire to use WDM mode. It was just an observation.

I got confirmation today from Focusrite that in Sonar preferences > audio device, it will only show up as a single input as shown in my first post. I'm getting alternate confirmation from another Sonar user running the 2i4. What this means is there is no 2nd input to use as the return for the external insert plugin. That is how it appeared and good to know that it is now confirmed. 2i2 and 2i4 users take note :)
