Any thoughts on the Audio Technica 4041?
I'm thinking about trying one of these for recording steel string guitar and for the price (around $350) it seems to get rave reviews. I'm just after something that's flat and accurate under $500. My steel string is an awesome sounding instrument and I'd like to capture it with as little coloration as possible. If it works out I may get another one at some point. It will be going straight into my RME Babyface.

I had a pair of AT4041 mics. Not bad at all... You can capture some nice acoustic guitar tracks with them.

Not to derail the thread, but how do you like the Babyface? I've got a Delta 1010 that I've had for many years and was wondering if I should upgrade. Also, have you tried the RODE NT1-A? It's about $200, and sounds pretty flat to my ears.

Thanks Jim. I'm wondering how they sound in mono but every online video I've found seems to demo them as part of a pair. Maybe I'll just go nuts and get 2, lol....

I haven't tried the Rode but I will look into it. I currently have a cheapish AKG large diaphragm condenser but feel like a small diaphragm would work better with my guitar and get me closer to the sound I'm after. The Babyface is a beast. Really happy with it. My Sonar experience has been a lot more stable with it than my last interface (a Fast Track), it sounds amazing and the drivers are rock solid. The software it comes with is hugely powerful, although it did have quite a learning curve for me (ie I actually had to read the manual, lol)

I just received a pair of CAD CM 217 that were Musicians Friend Stupid deal last week for $85 for the pair. I bought them for drum overheads because I'm in a band again so will need them. I have this Shure sm90?? ( number wore off) I really like on acoustic. I also use an AT 2020 and a AKG cs1000 and a few other CAD condensors I bought @ $ 30 each. . So I did a side by side test with headphones and there's no doubt these are going to be what I use from now on. The pair allows for me to use a x array. I have a few other CAD mikes I like so couldn't pass up this deal . I started reading reviews and most all were very positive. You don't expect this sort of performance from a cheap mike. Only negative reviews were from idiots who complained it needed phantom power..? Duh? Only a few said they can distort at hi SPL so I'll find out at a rehearsal. If they do so be it and I'll keep looking but I'm super happy with them on my Taylor. I want to re do every thing I've recorded now!! They are not flat and drop off around 8K. this seems to make for a nice warm acoustic sound. They also have a roll off and a Pad switch. Anyhow. I think an AT 4041 will be a good mike if you have the money. But check out the CAD's they are a bargain and hold their own up against the $$$ brands. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/condenser-microphones/cad-cm217-condenser-mic--buy-two-and-save I see the regular price is now $130 Can. I got a deal.
