No more True Piano for me
I bought, but never used until now The EZ Keys Essential Keys-Hope that name is right. It was on sale a while back. Comes with Grand, Upright and 2 different EP's . Lots of nice presets. I have slowly but surely been replacing the resource hog True Pianos CW edition with the toontrack stuff. Just thought I'd pass it on So much nicer and easier to mix also. Nope, I'm retired . work for myself playing out now and then, otherwise in my home studio writing and recording :-)

I use EZKeys to compose my MIDI, but after that I use other pianos that I have that sound better. To me, EZKeys pianos are marginal at best, but will get the job done...YMMV

well, if I didn't like them I wouldn't use them. I dm't agree with you marginal remark, but, ymmv. I only use it to sequence a parts. Once I convert to audio I can get what I need easily.

Last year, I worked with an artist and EZkeys is all over his CD. He didn't ask, I didn't tell and he liked the keyboard parts that I (snicker) added. That's not to say that I didn't do considerable tweaking to the piano parts. I like EZkeys because it sounds like the keyboards that this bassist and guitarist can relate to. I don't know all the nuances that a piano may have but I'm not working with purists doing classical or solo piano. I'm doing comping and that sort of rhythm piano type of performances and EZkeys does a good job of that.

I'm not saying they aren't "acceptable"...I'm saying that I....I....I have much better sounding piano's...and, because of that, EZkeys is "marginal"....it will do the job...but there are far better options if you have them....

They sound good and in a mix they are going to be very useful. That said I would probably use something else from my collection in preference. SampleTekk for grands and uprights and Scarbee for electrics. But that colection has cost me $$$. I do think True Pianos Atlantis is excelent though.

I realize there are much better piano synths\samples. There is always much better of pretty much anything. What works for me is what matters to me. After bouncing and then eqs, compressors, reverb, etc I end up with a piano (I am a guitar player) that sounds fine in my originals. My point was and still is, they are much more useful "to me" than true pianos CW edition ever was. That's all folks................................................

I might also, except I don't have anything else-except CW Truepainos and Kontakt 5 pianos. Ez keys wins that little battle for me. I did just get the Vintage Organs (Native Instruments). I like those very much. Probably "marginal" though :-)

No one cares to defend TruePianos? Is the one 4Front sells direct identical to the CW version?

I have the full package (True Pianos). It was my first full Piano module I bought waaaay before CW offered a stripped down version. Sometimes they fit in the mix nicely and other times not so much. I have about 30 different pianos now, but lately the one size fits all for me is The Giant by NI. That is one hella good Pie Annie.

Cheers Baps, just bought TruePianos from 4Front, but still have to compare. Nice new entries in the Fleer Piano Hall of Shame ('cause I can't play right) are ProductionVoices Grand Gold One and Estate Grand, CineSamples Piano in Blue, Sampletekk White Grand and Vertikal, Sonivox EightyEight2, the UVI grand pianos, XLN Addictive Keys Grand, Pianoteq5 and the new NI pianos in K10. As for electrics: AIR Velvet, AAS Lounge Lizard, GospelMusicians Neo-Soul, NI Scarbee, Pianoteq5 R1&W2, XLN Addictive Keys electric grand, SonicCouture EP73 and Broken Wurli. And of course EZkeys due to the BF sale. I'm crazy about pianos and really itchin' to start choppin' but I'm wondering if I'm still missing out on some of the great sounds. Synthogy Ivory? Garritan CFX? What else? P.s.: really crazy about keys indeed. Just think of the fact that you can play the exact piano Glenn Gould used for his first Goldberg registration and Miles Davis for his Blue masterpiece (CineSamples Piano in Blue).

Vintage Organs sounds pretty good straight out of the box, for may purposes you could get away with just using the presets. I like the way you have Hammond, Vox and Farifisa organs in the package. I have most of the NKIs edited now to put the upper manual, lower manual and pedels on different channels rather then the keyboard split you get as default. I have a couple of 61 note keyboards hooked up and can use the sliders on my Cakewalk A800 to control the drawbars on one of the manuals. Unfortunatly the other keyboard is old and does not have any sliders. While the presets sound pretty good I usually use a DI sound and put it through Melda's Vintage Rotary or XILS Labs LX122 depending on the sound I am after as they are better than NI's rotary in my opinion. Vintage Rotary is particularly good for distorted sounds.

A couple of tips. The lower octave on each manual is colored black on the interface. These are key switches for different drawbar settings associated with the patch, so you can quickly change the tone. All the preset NKIs have alternate voicings set up this way. You can also automate the drawbar settings in your DAW. One other cool feature is if you have a sustain pedal attached to you keyboard you can use it to switch the Leslie speed. Being able to control the drawbars and Leslie speed is a big advantage that VO has over static organ samples.

Good info- Great Sustain pedal-ahhh I didn't have a pedal hooked up to the keyboard because I use it mainly to sequence bass and drum tracks. I have a couple laying around here. sounds cool! Thanks Glyn-Appreciate it!

I like/use NI's The Giant and tend to still use my Kurz K2500 for organ stuff since I know it well. It's amazing that it has been my main keyboard since 1999! SHEESH. That was a good purchase! YMMV

B4II was (still is) excelent. The B3 sounds are at least on par with Vintage Organs. The transistor organs in VO give it the edge, I tend to stick with VO because I worry some update will cause what is now very old and unsupported software to stop working. That's probably paranoid, but. I also use Sampletekk's Tonewheel for really gritty sounds and Sounddust's Hammr for its special character. GSI's VB3 is also highly recommended, if they had not taken so long to get a 64 bit version out I would have bought it. Now I think I have things well covered with the addition of Melda's vintage rotary Leslie simulator which addresses some of shortcomings of Kontakt's rotary.
