[OT] Berklee Intro to Music Production Course - Class Notes

***UPDATE: The below course was renamed to "The Technology of Music Production" and appears identical to the one referenced in the original post, so the notes linked below should still be applicable.***

----original post with bad link removed----

After mentioning Berklee's "Introduction to Music Production" course again earlier, it occurred to me that some either join late or do not have the time to dedicate to the full class. When I took it a year ago, one of my classmates, Dianna Burrup, was kind enough to share the class notes she had put together with everyone so I sent her an email to ask if she would be okay to share it with all of you.

For those unfamiliar with the course, it is highly recommended to take this, especially if you are a new DAW user. It is not specific to any DAW, but more to the underlying principles that pertains to all of them. This course runs every 4 months or so (6 weeks long), and is going on now. Even joining late, it is possible to download all of the video lectures to your computer (by right clicking them) for later review (but it is impossible to take for a "grade" after the first couple weeks as assignments cannot be turned in late). If taking for "grade" it is highly recommended to dedicate the time to complete the weekly assignments.

For those who have taken, are taking, or are just plain interested... here are Dianna Burrup's Class Notes from that course (35 pages/11.82MB pdf). She said to freely share them, but please leave her work unmodified to give credit where it is due; she put a lot of effort into making these!

I had a great time reading through the notes you posted, Mettelus.

Thanks!! Definitely interesting.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Thank you!  This will be some valuable reading and a great "refresher".  I think it is good to occasionally  review the basics as we often get caught up in stuff that leads us away from the foundations of music production.  Very generous of your friend to share these notes.....she obviously put some work into this document.  Thanks for sharing this with the Forum Community.

A quick bump on this, since I mentioned this course (again) in another thread and it started its latest run on May 2nd (yesterday). For those folks new to DAWs in general, this course is highly recommended even if you simply audit it and participate in the forum there during its 7-week run. Dianna's notes in the OP should still be the same (the videos for the course are like 4-5 years old now, it just repeats every 3 months).

to the OP:  did you say the course is free?  I love free!!  However the link is broken now, I wonder if there is still a free version of it available there now?  Perhaps by a different name?  thanks!

Hmmm, it used to be. I just checked and it looks like that course has been absorbed into a 4-course Specialization, which is unfortunate. Not sure if that is due to the site being revamped or it went away for good as a solo class. It used to run about once a quarter (same videos each run), so is worth checking or even emailing them about.

Yes, they changed the name of the course. It's here: https://www.coursera.org/learn/technology-of-music-production

The most current session started yesterday.

Note: You can't enroll through the specialization page. Go to the link above, click the blue "Enroll Now" button, and choose "Audit" for free access to course content.

Weird, I just tried to log into the forum on my computer via Firefox and I.E. and it simply jumps to the main forum page and not logged in. I was hoping to correct the link in the OP, but Best Answer will have to suffice for now (limited to my cell atm). Thank you bringing up the link issue!

Coursera is a hosting site for numerous online courses, the actual course in the OP was created by Berklee College of Music. The videos are probably 5 years old now, but still very applicable to new DAW users.
