"Let's have a "rework a classic" competition" _ emerald soul

"Let's have a "rework a classic" competition"_ emeraldsoul

Ok this is by no means meant to be competitive. Just in the spirit of reworking classics.
To start things off, this is a song I recorded with the band some time back.

I don't know what you're referring to regarding a competition, but I listened to your song "Little Sister" and it was great!  Well done vocals and guitars, clean mix, solid!  I'm now following you on Soundcloud.

Sorry, I don't mean to be cryptic, but my posting is in response to Emeraldsoul's comment in responding to the posting of Witchita Linesman by markno999.

"I love that I can hear reworkings of seminal songs here! Pretty unexpected, and very cool.

I think anyone would be hard pressed to recreate a classic like this with such accuracy (apart from some nice vocal noodling at the end) - it's just like putting a nickel in the jukebox. And I mean a nickel, NOT a quarter!

However, the one thing I don't think was in the original - seems like an added alien cricket synth patch, pitched way up high, panning left and right - supposed to add shimmer, which it does, but I would vote to cut its volume in half. Things like that are subliminal ear candy at best and should not be the center of attention in such a fine song as this. Just a thought . . .

Holy crap, great job. Let's have a "rework a classic" competition - you would win.

    -Tom"

Waltenstein: Thanks for listening and the vote of confidence.

    Garybrun: Thank you too

Hey now, is my throwaway comment now an idea?  :)

It would be fun to have a "kind of" competition, redoing a classic, but we'd have to agree on an era, a time frame for completion, and would probably have to define "classic." And most of us would prefer to work on our originals anyway?

On all counts, extremely difficult to pull off, I'm thinking. Probably better off just to offer up the old chestnuts as they come along.

Little Sister is pretty smooth, very well mixed, vocals nice and up front, TOTALLY dug the harmonica, needed more piano or a piano solo? Just a thought (from a piano player!)

At one point you have guitar solo and harmonica solo going on simultaneously, you might pan them harder r-L for clarity?

    cool ending!

punchy bass is perfect for driving this tune ...

I don't really mean any sort of competition Tom, just thought it would be nice to hear other peoples take on old, as you put it, "chestnuts". I'm sure others have the odd cover sitting somewhere in a dusty folder.

    Batsbrew: That rocks.

Bapu: Wasn't that Dylan's "sellout" song. Haven't heard it in years. I like it.

What a great mix on Little Sister - very clean, well-balanced, great vocal and guitar!

There have been some fine covers posted here over the years. I remember in particular an ELO cover that went to great lengths to preserve the original flavor...I hope somebody can remind me who did that, as it was an impressive effort.

Maybe this thread would be a good place to compile a list of links to cover tunes. My first nominee: I Believe in Father Christmas by the Forum Monkeys. And if you liked Little Sister, you'll probably enjoy this Rick Nelson cover.

Of course, I have to mention the only cover tune I've ever contributed here, a Deep Purple song with Mark Wessels, Randy Prier and Jon Bouy.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Randy Prier is always great to collab with. One of my favourites was a cover of The Long Ryders 'Gunslinger Man', with Randy, Larry Hansen, Jonbouy and myself. The extended spoken 'bar scene' intro was lots of fun, as none of us knew exactly what the others were going to say until the final mix.
