I know what leveling does, but I'm having a hard time hearing the difference in sound on the TL-64 - except for distortion when I turn the effect way too high.
This plugin, IMO, is mis-labeled in its use of the word "leveler". Leveling is just a side-effect of its main function, which is to generate harmonic distortion. It should really be called a "clipper/compressor".
As with any clipper, it's best used with conservative settings. Light harmonic distortion is what the video Paul linked to above refers to as "color". What you're listening for is an emerging grittiness as you turn up the drive, an effect that reminds me of pushing a cheap PA a little too hard. A little dirt-ification can be a good thing, but not for everything.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
