Importing MIDI: Expression is lost

I have some MIDI files from Yamaha (XG type, I think) and when I play them with Windows Media Player (the sound is crap) but the expression (most specifically, variations in speed) is present.

But when I import the same file into Sonar (Artist) as MIDI tracks and attach them to Addictive Keys (the sound is great, of course) but I completely lost the expression of the song.

Is there are way to keep the expression of a MIDI song when importing (or playing) it in Sonar?

You're probably getting the tempo events ignored.  It's been a while since I did this with SONAR, but I recall I had some issues as well that took a little effort to sort ou.  From the CW online doc. there's what's below.  Note well item 4.

To import data from a MIDI file into a project
    1.
Open the MIDI file as a new, separate project.

    2.
Choose Edit > Select > All.

    3.
Choose Edit > Copy Special to display the Copy dialog box.

    4.
Make sure that Events in Tracks is checked. If you don’t want to import tempo changes, meter/key changes, or markers, uncheck those options. Click OK.

    5.
Open the target project, or click in the Track view for that project.

    6.
Set the Now time and current track to indicate where the material should be placed.

    7.
Choose Edit > Paste Special to display the Paste dialog box.

    8.
Check Paste to One Track if you want all material imported into the current track.

    9.
    Click OK.

Actually I just discovered that if I load Sonar (Artist) directly from a MIDI file, the expression is kept. The same happens if I drop the files directly from Windows Explorer into Sonar (when no project is present).

So it seems that if I create MIDI tracks from the File|Import into a existing projects, the expression is lost.

dmbaer: Thanks for your procedure. I will try it next time.
