Using Command Center: a Guide also there are instructions for manually installing

Note; I posted this in another thread. I thought after I posted it it may be better as its own thread.

I'm going to attempt a users guide to installing Sonar platinum. This is for a normal default install. See below for how to install when a custom install is needed

First Download Cakewalk Command Center I will refer to it as C3 hereafter.

You can get it here https://www.cakewalk.com/Command-Center

Once it is installed and you have purchased Sonar run it and you should see something like this.

Notice a couple of things here. One Sonar is listed at the top of a longer menu with a lot of red lights. These indicate not installed by C3. If they were yellow it means it has been installed by C3 but there is an update for it. Green means all is well and up to date.

Clicking on each item will either install or update it. You may also have an option to reinstall or uninstall.
The is some customization for C3 and the option menu is located to the right top. Its a little cog wheel looking icon. It will let you set a path for VSTs and the like. It will not let you install Sonar in a non default directory or disk.

What if you need to have a custom install!

You still use C3 to download the install files but before exit C3 and on a Win 8/8.1 system goto ProgramData/Cakewalk/ Platinum/ Command Center/ Download.

There you will see all the downloaded files that can be installed directly. Just double click on each one in order to start the install for that item. This will give you full user control on where and what is installed.

Anther reason to use the manual method is if you need to install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit system. C3 has no option to select which version to install. You can use it to install the normal 64 bit version than do a manual install to also install the 32 bit version.

Note
It is important to authorize via this https://www.cakewalk.com/My-Account/Offline-Activation  This is for off line activation.
This came from Ryan Munnis of CW.

Any questions, I will attempt to answer.

thanks, John. way cool.
2b clear; are you  saying run the installer(s) individually,
(while connected)
and C3 will know about my custom install?

No, I'm not. C3 is a little brain dead. It has no idea what has already been installed from an older version such as X3. It wont see a custom install either. It has to go through its routine and flag all it installs. In this case where one is using the manual method C3 wont have any clue. However this wont cause a problem for the user except having notification of an update.

That is why I recommend using C3 for the complete install of everything. This also includes activation. C3 takes care of that too.

ok I SEE.

The reason my install went so well is because
I accepted all the default install stuff...
A record was made for C3, that did not exist b4
running C3.

John, this is great - thank you!!! I think this needs to be included in the eZine for the next update. If more things get added in this thread, so much the better.

You still use C3 to download the install files but before exit C3 and on a Win 8 system go to ProgramData/Cakewalk/ Platinum/ Command Center/ Download.

There you will see all the downloaded files that can be installed directly. Just double click on each one in order to start the install for that item. This will give you full user control on where and what is installed.

John - I don't think I saw a way to use C3 to download an installation file only. It jumps directly from download to install, doesn't it? If you know a way to use C3 for download only, then install manually, please share.
Thanks!

Yes Larry, you have that right.  This is more for those that need to install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit system.

Hi John... helpful as always....

about to upgrade, but I'm not a fan of these kind of "command center" and the like... as I always want to have full control on my system and software installations...

thus your point above is very good to know....... ;-)

I think if we press CW on this they will improve C3 for the future. They have said as much in other posts.

Its a very cool way to install Sonar. Its only problem is CW has always accommodated custom installs but C3 is incapable of handling one. I don't blame them for this oversight because this is its first iteration.

Nice thread and thanks John!

CC Thoughts:

Color coding program's status bullets works but I see where that could be confusing
I find it frustrating to not know what was in the Studio Instruments update
I would like to at minimum be able to point CC to previous installed programs so CC can assist in keeping those programs updated (ie: Dimension Pro, Ad2...)

I totally agree. Actually it would seem a perfect opportunity to enhance how well things are explained and documented. They always had a way to selectively install individual components. Now that is no longer possible. Also we loose the ability to select what file types are associated with Sonar.

I am in total favor of an enhanced C3.

"You still use C3 to download the install files"

How do I do that, download to install manually?
I am going on the assumption that C3 will try to put "samples" on my C drive;
something that isn't going to happen on my system!
Thanks,
Tom

Simple really:

Just open Command Center and click on your user name on top right side.
That will take you to your product page.

There you can download only whatever you need to.

Stratman thanks for that.
I did have to select "Products>View Your Products" from the user name link.
Most excellent!
Is it true if I place the downloaded files into "Command Center\Downloads"
CCC will "know" what needs updating and what does not?
Why am I asking you? (think of that as the french vous, meaning all of you; not tu as in asking only Stratman)
I could just dl Dim Pro and see; right?
I'll check that out!

My understanding is if you download the files you need to install them manually. C3 wont know about the download. It doesn't read the files already dled manually.

At least this will let you have a lot more control over the install. You wont get notification of updates doing it this way.

Based on previous posts on this topic, there may be an XML file in the ..\Command Center\Cache\products folder that stores the file names that CCC is "aware" of.  Perhaps adding the manually copied file names to the right location in this XML file will allow CCC to see them?  Not at my DAW at the moment so am just going from memory.

Check this out.
If you have the 32bit version installed, the Sonar button stays yellow until the 32 bit version has also been updated manually. I saw this behavior in both of the recent updates.
It appears C3 acknowledged the presence of the 32 bit version, but it can't do anything about it.
I'm not complaining. C3 is letting me know I'm not done yet. It's still easy.

Copy that, John. I think C3 may be a lot smarter than it's letting on.
i am anticipating an evolution much like we saw with the X series. I think the new scheme of things holds a lot of potential, and C3 is going to be an integral part of that.

I only download the files So I have copies (backups) of everything Platinum. Then I save them. All the updates, etc.
I have always (always being since jan 16, 2015) used C3 to update things. Never a problem.

Right now the backup folder (install files, read mes, XLN inst, etc) I save externally for Platinum is 9.47GB-that's all of it (well not DP, Rapt, etc)

I would have thought everyone wanted backups of the install files. I always do.
I just ignore the red lights on dim pro,Rapture, Melodyne (I have the full editor)

Okay... I received Platinum as a gift, and after seeing all the CCC hubbub I opted to simply redeem it and manually install everything. The only glitches thus far was that the Boz and IR installs downloaded with no extension, so I simply added a ".exe" to them and they installed fine (they are installation files).

As I watched DimPro doing its thing, I was concerned that it had undone what I had done, so immediately checked the C drive and no multisamples were loaded. I then checked what I had done with X3 and the registry was unaltered. For those interested, I had physically moved the multisamples to a HDD and changed the registry pointer accordingly.

Registry key altered -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\dp

Only parameter changed (pointing to where I move the Multisamples) -
"Multisamples Folder"="F:\\Cakewalk Content\\Dimension Pro"

So far, CCC has been left completely uninstalled. I may leave it this way until it matures, but Platinum does not warn me of "demo mode" and so far I have seen nothing awry.

Edit: I spoke too soon... the second launch of Platinum says it is in Demo mode, lol
