I had an eye on the VS-700 for quite a while and was about to commit myself and order it ... but had to realize that the biggest European store stopped selling it ... Apparently I could still get the 700 R+C from a different shop, but wonder if that would be a good idea??? What worries me are the reports here about insufficient integration with X1d and also that linking to the OctaCapture supposedly no longer works. Any comments from you guys whether to jump aboard the leaving train or wait for the next one ???

Hi Fly, if you are staying with Sonar and need an integrated surface then the 700C is still the one to go for. It still works under X1 albeit with some quirks but it is functional and certainly still the best option for a surface under Sonar. I wouldn't hold my breath for the 'next one'. Cheers!

Re:VS700R No Longer Available ?? 2012/05/26 22:28:00 (permalink)
I rate the v700 very highly, and I don't regret buying it. BUT, and this is a big but, ongoing support of it is clearly a secondary concern for both Cakewalk and Roland. V700 updates lag behind program updates by a significant amount amount of time, and they are increasingly "will this do", IMO. So while I say I don't regret buying it, I don't think it's lived up to the initial "tight integration" promise all that well; that's intermittently true depending on what updates / versions you're using, but if you're always up to date with Sonar versions, that means spending significant periods dealing with flaky v700 integration. And even speaking as a notorious cakewalk fanboi shill, I think that's below par for something this expensive. So while I wouldn't say "don't buy it", I can't give it a whole-hearted recommendation either. It's fine for now, but I can see it having an early obsolescence, given the lacklustre support. A shame, I think.

I feel the same. It's a good piece. It could easily be great. It should certainly be amazing (considering alleged flagship status and price).

The VS700 works great with 8.5.3. I think there are many problems going with it's availability. It's not a matter of integration with X1. Those problems can and I think will be fixed by the guys at Cakewalk. As to whether or not Roland is still supporting it, that's where the problems come in. You must remember that Japan is in a very dire situation due to the nuclear plant meltdown and tsunami. I'm sure they are having problems producing certain things. Things leaving Japan are subject to checks for radiation. At this point in time, the aftereffects of radiation contamination have spread due to weather, ocean tides, people moving, things moving, etc. Irradiation is a long term problem that spreads and changes and gets into all kinds of materials that are neccesary to make technological-electronic machines. Mostly, conductive metals can attract and retain radioactivity and become subject to the decay caused by irradiation. Don't ask me for facts on this, I don't have any stats. Just remember, the place where the VS700 is made is in Japan, and Japan is suffering through a huge crisis with an uncertain future.
Add to that the economy meltdown and the marketing bean counters and a perfectly good peice of equipment may get sidelined.

Craig makes a lot of sense. 'If' Cake can get the stability back into the 700 platform under X1, then we are certainly once again on the preferred winner... at least under Windows 7. Cheers.

Under Win 7. That statement speaks volumes in the world of DAW's. Do you suspect that every OS would like it's own built in DAW? It's not a section of computer use that they have pursued or fostered much, but the stats change as more users find out they can be rock stars too.

I've not noticed any lack of *stability* with the v700, I have to say. What problems are people having?

Quite an interesting question ... I may have to read the other posts in this forum or just find out myself ...

Well, I'm happy to say that I did jump aboard ... I just got my VS-700 delivered. I could not resist buying it as I had found a store exhibit, supposedly with traces of usage but a real good rebate on it ... I had to decide quickly or walk away ...

Anyway, the set looks brand new and came with the latest firmware ... took about 30 minutes to unbox, install and get rolling ... and my first impression is really good; seems quite intuitive and I love the channel strip locking ... the only thing I could not get to work within my first 45 minutes on it was the Fantom (no sound) but I will RTFM before bugging you guys ...

Fantom is a bit of a pain to set up. There a knowledge base article on the main site which you should read through carefully.

Re: VS700R No Longer Available ?? 2013/09/02 16:53:47 (permalink)
Great!  :-(  I have been looking into the V 700 and am finding it unavailable.  Again, Cakewalk, yet again disappoints it customers!  I have been looking to upgrade to this and now when I finally am able to, Cakewalk drops it.  At this point, after being a Cakewalk user for 5 years, I think its time to move on.  Too many issues with Cakewalk and its products.  So, instead of spending the money on a V700 which I wanted, I am taking that money and purchasing a brand new iMac and going with Logic Pro.  After researching and researching, I am finding that Cakewalk is no longer in the top 5 DAWs!   Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, FL, and Pro Tools still hold strong.  I wish I could say that it has been real and fun.  Cakewalk, if you cant keep up with the big boys, don't play the field.  Very dissapointed.

Running Sonar x2 on Windows 7 64bit Quad 4. 6GB Ram, 1TB Hard Drive. Tascam US-144 Audio Interface, Roland A-800PRO Keyboard Controller.

Did you call them and ask??? You can't find one for sale new with the retailers right now. and did want the  whole package ? V700C and V700R? If you only want an interface with no Fantom synth, why not get the Octacapture instead? You'll notice a lot of stuff missing from the Roland lineup, made in Japan is having some problems. It's still listed on the Roland website. If you're using Cakewalk Sonar you'll want the V700 set. I agree it's a sad bunch of unexplained circumstances, but at least make the inquiry to Roland.

Why do people come here always saying the Roland VS-700 is not available when they're available all day on ebay?

New VS-700c    -  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cakewalk-SONAR-V-Studio-700-Console-/261271759630?pt=US_Computer_Recording_Interfaces&hash=item3cd502ab0e

I'm sure you could get the V700R new also somewhere, or even the new Studio Capture Interface and you have the whole set.

That's a good question it seems kday when they are quite a few on US eBay... I guess people used to traditional shops as opposed to online are finding it difficult to source them?

Online you get visibility across thousands of sellers as opposed to a select few and they do indeed seem readily available.

I think new in the box editions of the V700 Set are not available right now. Same with the Fantom G8 and Fantom G6 workstation keyboards. I wanted a G6 and that editor to add to my DAW. Time and other thieves you know?
No one is saying what the problem is at ROLAND. Equipment is under the control of Roland. So is Cakewalk software now, so,... Who's driving the boat? We'd have to get directly with Roland for the right answer.

Re: VS700R No Longer Available ?? 2013/09/11 21:56:01 (permalink)
seriously we must come back in time a little... just to remember good times :)

Roland bought Cakewalk, happy days and wonderful times ahead right?

They got the vs700 out, tailored for sonar 8.5 - Looks like they will conquer the world

When all was rock solid and amazing, they erased EVERYTHING they had and started a totally new DAW from scratch (more or so...) less than 2 years after vs700 release - Sonar X1

Lots of glitches, typical of a newly developped software, released under the pressure of a corporation's deadline... but the DAW must WORK since cakewalk are DAW prgrammers.... where's the console in all this? HOW CARES, sonar is buggy so let's fix that thing first...

Sonar X1d was not too bad. Corporation deadline = Sonar X2

Sh!ttier than ever with the console. No X2 features added AT ALL. Not a big deal if previous functions are intact. Well... there's some thread about it I think... LOLL Easy to see that they do not even have the console in the lab for testing.

New features on a not much stabilised core = new bugs. More time for the developper/programmers to spend with Sonar and the console is in the "miscellaneous" section of Sonar X2a patch bug fix list.

Also, Sonar X2 is having a hard time with all MCU controllers, so controllers in general have not been addressed yet. Maybe getting this aspect sorted will help the vs-700...

Let's not forget: Windows 8 is out in the meantime. That mean compatibility as soon as it's out, finish fixing core bugs for 7, face new ones for 8, adding touch screen compatibility to stay in the game (looks like a "cool" Roland exigence... anyway) and much more.

Bottom of the line, the vs700 was killed by Sonar X1. Less than 2 years later.

The VS700 had no chance.
