DST...
I think it has made me crazy, maybe I have chair lag. I almost fell asleep drinking coffee this AM, sort of leaned over in the chair... then the phone rang. Alas. I realize the farmers need the extra hour of sunlight to help get the crops going but it sure is hard to get used to. Now, I think I have the 4 seasons figured out... The extra hour of sunlight that comes with DST makes things warmer and we have spring. So, it gets warmer people run their air conditioners more. The ACs blow a huge amount of hot air outside and it gets even hotter, then we have summer. Then people get huge power bills and cut back the AC and less hot air is blowing outside, this brings on Autumn. Then when we go back to standard Time and lose the extra hour of sunlight it gets cold... and we have winter. It is so obvious. Maybe if they left time alone it would be Hawaii everywhere. I'll get over this soon I hope... J

I was telling my wife... we are going to have to adjust, we can't go to bed this summer 2 hours before sunset. We are in the western part of the eastern time zone and on the longest days it doesn't get fully dark until 10:30... and I'm in the SOUTH. If I were in Canada or Norway or something, well I'd expect that. I'm tellin' ya... it could be Hawaii everywhere! ... but Nooooo. I guess I do feel goofy today. Well, more goofy than Pluto anyway... BTW, what exactly is Goofy? A dog? An old black man once told me that the dog was God's favorite creature because it is God spelled backwards... really! He also gave me Gene White's yard rake. He was Gene's groundskeeper and I was his exterminator. I still have that rake! A small link to famedom. It must be the time...

No matter what time WE say it is, there is NO more daylight, or sunlight in the day. If farmers want to get more done, they get up earlier or work later.

All the farmers I've ever known (and at one point, I were one), usually start work before daylight and stop for the day after dark. Plants and animals are not impressed with our ability to change our clocks.

Yea, they already do that! My wife comes from an old time farming family. Her great grandmother would have a full meal (dinner style) fried chicken, biscuits, cornbread, and pots of vegetables ready at about 8:00 AM because they had all been working since 4:00 AM. Ring the dinner bell and everyone come's to the house (except the hired hands who ate outside and on other plates etc... different times). I'm sure the extra light helps too! J

I know that my experiences may not be typical, but we used these newfangled doohickies called "Electric Lights" to see when it was dark. In the barn, you could pull on a chain and, like magic, a 40 watt light bulb would start glowing, for no reason. If that wasn't enough, you could point the pickup in the right direction and turn on the headlights. Sometimes, when we felt like being technical wizards, we'd carry a special electric light that had batteries inside the case. You'd flip a switch and Shazaam! Light would flash out of the end. Barn cats were not amused. When these gizmos were not available, we used techniques like, "Feeling Your Way", "Finding the Barbed Wire Fence By Accident", and "Remembering Where You Left The Pitchfork." Learning to navigate your way through the pig pen without falling became an essential survival skill.
