x3 - assign Instrument definition to midi output for VST

I was all set to create instrument definitions for my K5 setup in Sonar x3 ... and find that the midi outputs for a VST Instrument, Kontakt 5, do not show up as "midi Devices" and so can not have an instrument definition applied to them.   ???
 
Is there a work-around for this?    Not having an instrument definition triggers the Bank/Patch Dialog bug where bank number gets reset to null every time you close the dialog.
