Like Bill, I may be in a band...

And as a result of putting myself out there me sharing that video I just posted here in that other thread on Facebook, I've just been asked if I'd join a local band by a guy I hooked up with last weekend when we got out...

Kind of took me by surprise. My wife was supposed to jam with them - she was all excited that she'd get to sing Priest's Painkiller again. Me, I never thought of it.

Must be between 15-20 years since I've played live or even just played with a band or even just played covers. I mean we have the project with my wife, but we won't be playing before a while, and it's just so abstract. And it's like I'm just there to back her up.

It just feels odd to be noticed, being so used to just working alone in the studio.I don't know whether I can do this, or even want to. But it's frickin' nice even just to be asked. :)

See how it goes, hope it all works out to be beneficial for you and yours.

All the very best!

In regards to offers, I've been contacted by other bands, A&R scout, Internet radio host/forum over the past few years and most recently a new music production company. After initial trials (or research/talks),  I declined mostly due to them having nothing really/truly significant that would be beneficial for me at all in the short or long term.  I have a lot more work to do based on years of effort I've already committed to (and invested in) ~  I have solid foundations, now I need to build a secure framework. I have very clear directives and know exactly what needs to be done. Meanwhile, its steady as she goes, stay on course and watch out for those rogue waves

I think those guys are in it for fun, playing covers and good old music that they enjoy. Good old school heavy metal. If anything, that works with me.

I'm 42. I had my glimpse at traveling with a bunch of stinky hairy musicians in a van, eating crap and sleeping on the floor in some dorm room. It wasn't for me back then, much less now.

Musically, I'll try to make things happen in my little studio. Otherwise, if I ever get confident enough in my abilities - and catch up w/ theory  and sight reading - I may finally finish the audition kit for Cirque, in case there's any opening in one of the shows here. But we kind of have an agreement w/ my wife that I'm a house husband first.

It just feels odd to be noticed, being so used to just working alone in the studio.I don't know whether I can do this, or even want to. But it's frickin' nice even just to be asked. :)

This happened to me recently. A band that's been around for years and gigging on a solidly booked basis asked me to come and jam with the possibility that if we liked each other, it could be a long term gig. They had scaled back to playing quite a bit less.... maybe 2 well paying gigs pre month.  That seemed reasonable to me.

I was conflicted too.... did I even want to invest the time away from my family and eat up 2 weekends per month plus the practice nights...... decisions decisions..... first...lets go jam with the fellows and see.

So I want to jam. I've told this story before.... so the is the nutshell version. I had a good time but the band didn't seem like seasoned veterans of the stage. They seemed more like a band that was just getting started. Lots of wrong chords, missed cues, nails on the blackboard harmonies....... needless to say, I didn't join.

Maybe working in my studio has spoiled me. After all, I can get things precise and to my liking here.  But...as you say, it was nice to be asked, and my buddy the bass player (we played together in a church band in the past) told me that I was the first one they wanted to ask to take the job.

I have no regrets about telling them, "Thanks for asking me to audition for the band, but I have other goals for my music at this time...."

I am in no hurry to take a decision, fortunately.

I've never been in a band other than as the frontman, even when I technically joined as a guitar player. I systematically ended up front stage. And I don't want to be there anymore. On the other end, letting someone else drive the band doesn't really work for me either.

Even though it'd be nice to try and not be the point of focus, and get to concentrate on playing. I have no idea what that is like. But that I'll have a chance to do with my wife. It's our thing but she's the star. Best of both worlds to me.

The other thing is that I'm not big on covers, unless I can twist them to fit into some kind of bigger picture that's mine. I see myself as a songwriter more than a musician. I'm not sure I'd have the skills to learn and play other people's solo. The only time I do that is when I feel ready to try and master something specific - to gain speed or such. That usually takes me forever - it's a long term thing for me.

Anyway, I'll see how it goes, maybe attend one of their rehearsals and hang out.
