>An Urban Love Affair< ..........Sonar Platinum

Hi all!
Here's my 1st tune using Platinum.  It's kind of an urban jazz thing that I was trying to showcase the Heavyocity DM-307 Drums module (the Urban kit) and also the iZotope Breaktweaker beatmaker plugin. There's also some Addictive Drums 2 electronic drums laying down the backbeat.

The "grit" you will probably notice is from the Urban Kit drums...not clipping.  LOL

Guitars used were a Gibson Les Paul Standard for the distortion guitar, an Ibanez AFJ-95 jazz guitar, and a Gibson ES Les Paul (hollow) for the clean lead.

Hope you like it.  Comments welcomed.

Here 'tis:

As usual, I have a "surprise ending" on this one as in several of my other tunes.  Wait for it....

Cheers!

Tony

Thanks Daryl.  It was fun...despite a few computer/Sonar glitches.  The DM-307 is a hoot all by itself!

Smooth licks.  I don't get into the songs forum as much as I used to but decided to drop in and have a listen. I'm glad I did.

Very smooth all the way around. I might push the bass up just a hair, that would be about it mix-wise.

the ending was completely baffling. Didn't see that coming! Where'd everybody go??!?

Slick production, very nice lead guitar work. I like how the end wounded down (slowed), like someone rested their hand on the turntable.

Only two minor criticisms: The crash seems a little too loud at 3:38, although that might be what you intended, that crash does sound great. The bass needs to be lifted a little in most parts however, there are bass peaks here in there so watch out you don't exceed those peaks further. I would prefer to use a volume envelope to keep those peaks as is whilst slightly bringing up the softer parts.

Tom and Greg... I really appreciate those critiques.  I struggled with the bass a bit, as it was an experiment of mine to use 2 totally different bass types in the song...  the "verses" have a stereo/delayed bass (Zeta3), and the "breaks" use a very mono centered one., yet the frequencies are similar.  Was a little hard to balance them and maintain the stereo effect and not sound like 2 songs joined together.

Greg- can you explain the term "volume envelope" a little for me?  Not sure I know what you mean.
I think that crash came from Battery 4... and I'll bet I forgot to go back and lower its volume in the kit.... I find most of Battery's samples to be pretty hot right out of the box.

    Daniel-  thanks for the comments!

    Cheers!

Very nice. Easy to listen to. I'm on phones now cause my kids are sleeping but the bass sounds ok to me in the mix.

I can't speak for Greg but envelopes mean automation, in this case on volume.

Hi Tony, what Tom said, Thanks!

When using envelopes I always place the nodes in manually, precisely where they need to be. This way I end up with way less nodes to edit and overall easier to see, looks much clearer, cleaner. This is why I prefer to use the term; Volume Envelopes.

Wow! Lots of things going on in the mix, and you've got everything nestled away perfectly in its own spot. Very nice mix! I'm not much of a contemporary jazz guy, but I really like your playing. This whole thing is very polished sounding and ready for commercial release. Great job all around!

Lynn-  Thanks for the kind words.  I actually like the arranging and mixing tasks better than songwriting duties.

Songcraft-  Thanks for the clarification.  I sort of thought that's what you meant but wasn't positive.  I sometimes draw my own curve too.

Leadfoot-  I think that's about as good a compliment as one can get!  Thanks for listening!  The "polished sound" is what I strive for.

    Cheers!

I put the tune on You Tube as an MP3 instead of the 24bit wav that's on Soundcloud....and dang it, I think it sounds better on You Tube.  What's up with that??

Hey, that was good!  Love the guitars - the lines, the playing, the tones.   There's a lot happening in the supporting tracks as well and it all fits well - nice arrangement.   I found myself forgetting about the mix while listening, so overall it definitely worked for me.

And yeah, the ending...  sounds like something I would do.

I really appreciate these comments.  Some of you picked up on a "new" (ie...new for me) technique I'm trying to adopt where I give each instrument more space and "weave" a texture as phil said.  I'm glad it got noticed.  I used to do this "wall of sound" thing to compensate for my lack of keyboard and other musical skill, but I think this arrangement sounds way better and a bit more "pro".

    Thanks again guys.

Super slick production and playing here Tony. I think the electronic drum elements add a nice flavour to this, more so than a straight acoustic kit would have - gives it a more modern edge.

    Great ending too.o.o.o.....
