dual hard drives

Is it best to put projects on a "2nd" hard drive and the program on the main drive?
Would that improve performance?

    I've read mostly people and manufacturers recommending it but I've seen articles not recommending it too.
    From what I understand a 2nd drive with just music files is a good thing, yet for a computer it's harder/more demanding to read data from an external device.
    I just use a 2nd drive for a weekly backup of my Sonar folder, have a Solid State Drive on my computer which really helps if running software like DAW's or computer games and I have plenty free space on my machine.
    Just my opinion / my expercience..

    This would be true for a laptop, but not a desktop in which case the second drive would be internal.
    I don't know what we're talking about in this thread.

    I would strongly recommend, that audio-data is on a seperate internal harddrive.
    If you you have the audio-folder within the project-folder (recommended) a seperate harddrive gives you clear higher performance.
    Use a third (external) harddrive (or cloud-storage) to regularly backup your projects.

    It all depends on the computer mother board, the disk drive protocol, and the specific disk drives.  Unfortunately, your question does not include information on any of these items.  Dual drives have helped on some systems.  They have actually made things worse on others.

    I have my system and all my programs on one internal hard drive, and all of my working files on another drive.  For convenience, I have all my installers on that second internal drive as well so they are easy to reach, but they aren't accessed while working on anything musically.
     
    SSDs - if you can, they make a difference.

    Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.
