New to Sonar (Cakewalk)
Greetings From Sweden...! I come from the Steinberg world off DAWs and thought switching platform for my music creation and chosed Sonar Professional. (via Steam) But .. The program crach constantly .... my vst pluins uses more CPU power than in other DAWs (Cuabse 8 and Reaper) and the program seems to feel thoroughly at all to use.. When I want to edit something, the screen turns white and a message that Sonar.exe has stopped working is shown, this does not happen all the time but ..10-20 times an hour is often enough for me to think that it's boring. .;) The performance view in sonar shows low activity but plugins goes more high.. Have now used the program for a few days, but because of all crashes I considering I throw out the program and return to Cubase as the program feels unstable and in some early beta version. I have adjust the settings to the recomended values and even tryed lot more. Is there some 3th paret software that can cause this? Is there any differents in Steam version vs Boxed? (beside the box) ;) Do you have any tips or help getting me to stay? I will try them all...for a few days more! Win 7 64-bit Pc i5 3.1 12 RAM Roland quad-capture/Line6 HD500 Vst (moste common) Native Instrument - Studio Drummer and Strummed Acoustic

Hi there. Welcome to the forum, this is most definitely the right place to get help. You'll find many knowledgeable users here more than willing to help. Sorry to hear you are having problems, I can assure you that Sonar crashing (at all for me never mind frequently) is not "normal". As far as I know there is no difference between Steam and any other install/version. Are you using the latest version? (which is Braintree) I see you have two interfaces listed. Which one are you using and what mode? That is found in Preferences->Audio->Playback & Recording. Generally you should try ASIO but for some devices WDM may work better. To be crashing all the time while "editing" suggests that there is something wrong somewhere and may take a little trial and error to pin down. When you say "editing", what specifically are you trying to do? It might also help if you list any FX or other plugins in the project. Also try the same thing with no FX or plugins loaded.

Those are the plgins I use in my project..never had time to add more before program says "good bye" :) In "About Sonar" I see Sonar Professional version 21.01.00 Build 5 -x64 In the steam pages I see Braintree also and it says its installed but cant find that name in About Box...just professional any help?

Welcome to the forums. Are you using the latest drivers on your gear also are you using updated software. Is there an external gpu in your computer? I read that it might cause problems if you are using an internal one. Is there a heat problem?

Somehow I can now use the program if I don't do more then one thing at the time, if editing or changing anything in the plugins or edit in the piano roll while the playback is on, it crashes at once!...and even then all 4 corse is in low activity.

Sounds like it might be a video problem. Check for plugins that use GPU acceleration (e.g. FabFilter, Waves, Meldaproduction) and see if symptoms change after they're removed from the project.

No. Braintree only gets mentioned in the CCC. The about box displays the version number. What does that say there?

Thanks for all help, Foks!! I ended up with re-installing everything that had to do with audio and made a reg-clean manually to be sure to not leave any tracks about cakewalk and sonar....and installed with everything upgraded to latest driver: Windows, Audio-interface, plugins and and so on....GPU as well..and now it works...! :) And..I upgraded to Platinum without to know what I bought but is sounded better..:) Gimme some time and i think i will feel secure as in cubase, i think! Its not easy as I thought to leave Steinberg suit after 15 years and start over with a new program but its exiting, new colors and blinking led is always nice for a tech nerd as me..:) Now I sit here and trying to understand what I have installed Again...Thanks for helping me and giving me hints even thou i really don't know what caused the errors! Ps! Great forum!!

I own Cubase 8pro, Reaper, Ableton Live and Sonar Platinum. Since Platinum Sonar rocks, especially the vst performance is so much better than in Cubase..

You should ( also ) when using Cakewalk ( or any DAW ) it's best to cut off any programs that are working in the background ( like Antivirus programs, etc.) because they are drawing on the same Cpu as Sonar. I have Sonar Pro, Reaper, Samplitude and Music Creator Touch ( thru Steam ). Sonar rocks and gives you more bang for the buck. In addition, you should upgrade to Windows 8.1
