New Song

This isn't quite finished but almost there.

Sorry it's a bit long (8:30) but there's enough variation to maintain interest. I think.

Quite an undertaking.   Very interesting transitions throughout.   Very 70's styling with all the different seamless transitions, length and lights and shades.  I can hear Queen, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and a potpourri of many 70's faves.

The only two things I would change is that the harmony guitars might be a little too loud in comparison to the rest of the track in a few spots.   The other is I feel like the tom parts should be lower.  Maybe almost around a timpani type of low.

Not sure how many listens you will get with a 172MB Dropbox download but I glad I did.   Very good.  Listened twice to all 8:21.

Regards

A bit big too ;)

Nice clean mix on this. Could use a bit more low end and the snare sounds too boxy to my ears, but the vocals and guitars are very well done.

Quite an epic song.  The different parts blended together quite well and never lost my interest.  It must take a lot of patience to mix something this long, but you're on the right track.  I would prefer that you put it on a streaming site, but I'm glad I took a chance and downloaded this.  Keep up the good work.

All the best,
Lynn

Thanks guys.

Like I said, I haven't quite finished it yet so I will take your valuable insights onboard and make some adjustments.

172Mb is a bit weighty! I'll see what I can do to shrink it down a bit. This was, I believe, the 24 bit version so there's plenty of scope here.

32 Bit actually Colin nice epic piece which I feel sure by the time you finish tweaking and mixing will sound much more interesting, not that it is not already engaging.

I used 2 different BFD snares on this piece - the one you hear at the beginning & end is taken from their Percussion expansion pack and is in fact a metal sink/washbasin!

Brilliant work of art. Superb performances, arrangement and mix.

Minor criticism: Drumming disrupts the flow a bit in some parts.

Hey Greg - thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it.

Which aspect of the drums do you think need possibly re-visiting? Beats/rhythms? Choice of kit pieces?

The drums have not yet been frozen so I can easily take on board some fresh ideas

Hi,

Snare chops in the 'Verse', imo, ease off a bit, let it flow.  Drums fills i.e. toms/snare is fine. For the most part the drums are very nicely done.

Drums, vocals and harmonies are always quite challenging for me.

BTW, I love your vocals and harmonies, very slick/professional.

Re: New Song 2015/03/23 05:49:04 (permalink)
Thanks guys!!

I have to tell the truth here - this was our third attempt to get the vocals sitting right.

The first one I ended up hating the melody line - it just wasn't right for the song.
The second one was even worse as I had a go at singing it myself. Big mistake! No amount of V-Vocal or Melodyne could disguise what was obviously someone with zero vocal skills.

Greg - I hear what you're saying and will have a look at that.

An epic song.  It sounds really good here.  I got a classic Genesis vibe with the sustaining guitars very nicely done.  I don't think anything was out of balance.  Great job on such a huge undertaking.

Love the mix and the balance.  I think that 1:45 worth of intro is a bit too much, but that is an artistic thing that only you can judge.

Thanks for listening Glen.

I have just finished yet another version which includes an additional guitar line over the original backing during the intro, just to give it more interest.
It's not uploaded yet but hopefully I'll get around to it today.

Nice mix, very clear and open overall! The vocals were great too and I really like the intro.
Instrumentally reminds me of ELO... vocally reminds me of the Beatles (I'm sorry, most singers with an accent make me think Beatles :S) The bridge around 3:30 killer as well! Love the changes... really good tune!
