If you want to go the physical modelling route, AAS' Strum Electric GS-1 VST can get you those percussive, muted guitar sounds, and you'll be able to play the parts easier since it has dedicated strum notes for you to just hammer on syncopated 8ths and 16ths for authentic funk.
Might be better to wait until they release the new version though, since they just announced it was coming out when they released Strum GS-2 this week.
Dimension Pro should also have a decent guitar that you could shorten the amp envelope of to get close to the same tone from the mute technique; I remember Dimension Pro's Strats being pretty ok, run those through an amp sim with a bit of phaser and just a tiny bit of overdrive and you should be fine.
