Here Comes the Square

Singing? No. I am not doing my "Nick Winters" imitation on this one. :) Would love any comments!

Very good stuff Tom, I really enjoyed this very much......a cool electro funky groove. Nice composition and mix.....if anything at all, the bass seemed a liitle too hot (dB wise) on my H-phones, but that's subjective. Very nice playing on the keys as well.....catchy melody.

I liked it a lot. Bass grooves nicely. What drums did you use? The mix is right on too. I listened to it on a ipad but connected to a JBL Flip 2.

Tom, I really like this. Sounds great to me. If I had to be picky, I might say back off the reverb on the guitar a bit. I know its part of the "groove chill-out" wet vibe but it's a little too wet to my ears. But that's just being picky...

Super cool tune!  I will listen again in my Studio tomorrow..I'm just on these cheesy computer speakers today.  However, in these speakers it sounds like every main instrument is dead center.  I hear cymbals and reverb outside the field, but to my picky ears some of the instruments could be panned a little more (or make use of a stereo effect?) so they're not on top of each other.

    Liked it!

    Cheers!

Really nice groove!  I especially like the change around the 3:30 mark.  It comes across my monitors like a very professional production.  Keep it up!

Tom, The bass is just superb! love the piano parts too. For me the drums feel a little small and flat, the snare needs a little more bite. Other than that really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi all, many thanks for the comments and advice!

Well, I am a keyboard player so the guitars, generally, sound like they are being played by a keyboard player :) as the guitarists around here will surely notice. My bass is a Musicman Bongo, it's got two humbuckers, each with a 9v preamp active, plus I swapped the strings out for Bella tape wounds. So I can get sick low end for days, as the kids would say, and for the bass I EQ everything off above 500-600 hz, totally low-passed.

.....if anything at all, the bass seemed a liitle too hot (dB wise) on my H-phones,

and yes, the bass volume is definitely at its upper limit. I always spend the most time on the bass, I don't know about your experiences, but I think it's the toughest nut to crack.

However, in these speakers it sounds like every main instrument is dead center.  I hear cymbals and reverb outside the field, but to my picky ears some of the instruments could be panned a little more (or make use of a stereo effect?) so they're not on top of each other.

Yes, good call, tbosco, I don't have anything really panned more than 40%, and I might go back and have a look at that.

. . . for me the drums feel a little small and flat, the snare needs a little more bite.

Yes, I get that one, too. I'm using AD 1 with the Spike Stent Indie 3 kit, and the snare is more dry/crisp than meaty/solid. I have all kinds of eq and compression on that snare. I have AD2 and I might try some other kit to see if it's a little more happening.

Overall, thanks again, I know I've gotten to hear a lot of your songs and thanks for helping to make this forum vibrant.

    cheers,
    -Tom

Finally got to listen in my studio and what a difference!  Sounds much better Tom.  Love the bass playing...sounds like a bass player!  ;-)  But is it just a hair hot for Chill Electronica?  I hear it as very out front. (Would a little reverb on it soften it up for Chill???  Just askin'.)  I agree with Doug about the guitar reverb...maybe just a tad too wet.  (And I LOVE reverb!  lol)

    Really cool groove.

    Cheers!

Completely OT your reference to the band Pink Fraud on your blog page is that the american Pink Fraud?  I only ask as I have seen a band called Pink Fraud here in the UK and they were actually quite good.

Hi Wookiee, thanks! Hey, the Pink Fraud title is a blog title with a video below it. It was my snarky title for a video of a "band" with a really awful Pink Floyd cover of "Comfortably Numb". If you see the video, you'll get it soon enough!

I had no clue about a real "Pink Fraud" so I will change the blog title to avoid confusion and/or litigation!!!

    many thanks,

I likes...   Nice groove, bass is locked in.  Love the piano part starting around the 3:30 mark - nice and crisp yet dreamy.

Mix-wise, other than the snare being a bit dry and up-front, I liked it, including the delays and reverbs.  Nice and chill...

Yeah, I really like this.  Is that a real bass or memorex?  If it's a synth then you're gonna put guys like me outta business.  Wow, about 3:30 that piano kicked in and boosted it.  Very nice work, Tom.  I'd love to hear this with a complete vocal arrangement.  A GOOD vocalist and BGVs.  Had me movin'!
