SampleTank updated to 3.5, new libraries available, Custom Shop functionality added, more

I didn't see this posted, so I figured I'd let you know that SampleTank 3.5 is available now and there are also new sound libraries, Custom Shop, Favorites, and other features available.  http://www.ikmultimedia.com/sampletank3

Nice... greeted by a pop-up window advertising the latest iStuff when I hit the site... and all of the libraries are beats and loops.  Not complaining.  I'm really happy that IK has nothing interesting, as I'm tapped out as far as music purchases go at the moment.

Thanks for the heads-up on the update!  That is appreciated.

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

What's New in 3.5:
  • Additional sound libraries: 12 new sound collections split between the beatmaking instruments and patterns "Beats Series” and loop construction-kits, genre-specific "Elektronika Series
  • SampleTank 3 Custom Shop: Browse, preview, download and purchase all your favorite IK gear seamlessly
  • Favorites system: Star and store your most used instruments for easy recall
  • Improved interface: Browse and open instruments with your computer keyboard
  • Improved organization: Instrument libraries are displayed through easily viewed graphic banners

As usual, IKM makes nothing clear and simple...there's a button labeled "Download", but that just takes you to a dialog with options to get SampleTank Free.

To get the update you have to:
1. Log in
2. Click "Support" on the menu bar at top
3. Click on "My Products"
4. Click the Download button to get the executable
5. Click on "click here to download the sound library update"

Get the 3.5 update first, which only takes 20 minutes or so. Chrome says it'll be another 16 hours before the library files are finished. I'm tempted to just skip them, since they don't sound like the kinds of things I'm interested in, but then it would seem like a lot of bother just to be able to put stars next to instrument names.

Re: SampleTank updated to 3.5, new libraries available, Custom Shop functionality added, m 2015/03/26 22:56:18 (permalink)
Installed the update. The installer says you can't skip the library update "or some instruments will not sound correct". With 3 hours remaining on the library download, I went ahead and installed the executable update anyway.

Windows once again complained that I was putting my computer at risk by running the installer. Sheesh.

The installer first runs the authorization manager installer, then the custom shop installer (I was hoping there'd be an option to skip that). Installation took only a few seconds. Think we're done? Not so fast - on first load, it rebuilds the instruments database, perhaps on the presumption that I've followed instructions and added the new instruments. This takes a few minutes, so I have a cup of tea. Upon completion, I was relieved that it didn't make me go through online authorization again.

The "improved browser" claim eludes me. All I see is that there is now an icon next to the top-level tree list item. And I have the ability to add a barely-visible grey star next to individual instruments to flag my favorites. No other enhancements are obvious, at least at first glance. I do notice that it's now rather sluggish when switching between views, but it's only a 2-second delay so I'm not concerned. Happy to see my imported libraries and good ol' Miroslav are still there.

In summary, the pluses are: installation was painless, no need to re-scan or re-authorize, and nothing got broken. But don't get your hopes up dub/Rain, it's the same interface, near as I can tell.

Gave the Custom Shop a look (it takes a while to start up, be patient). I've said before that I think this is a brilliant bit of marketing, but I was pretty disappointed by the wares on display there. It's pretty clear the direction IKM is going...Minimal, Hip-hop, Trance, House, EDM, Hardcore, Techno...I feel so old. I'm gonna go put on some J.S. Bach as therapy.

Does anyone know if all the ST2 libraries and synths work in ST3 SE? (I know they work in the full version of ST3, but not sure about SE). I only have ST2 and all its dust collecting libraries.

This was not my experience, the new CS works great here.  I would report your issue to Tech Support at http://www.ikmultimedia.com/contact-support/mi/ if you are still experiencing this issue and they'll be able to sort it out for you.

Thanks for the confirmation, I appreciate it. Are there any downsides in using ST3SE with my older ST2 synths/libraries?  (I'd hate to buy it and then find some compatibility or other restriction in using the legacy products).
Thanks!!!

I've had a different experience trying to move to this update.

1. download of the two pieces was smooth and fast.  Hooray!
2. clicked on the installer for the Sound Library Update 3.5.  Install went smoothly, then errored out with this message: "unable to copy Bass Clarinet Stacc Short.st3i"
3. wondered if everything else installed, went to the Install SampleTank installer for 3.5.  It says right away, first install Sound Library update 3.5
4. okay, so maybe my install wasn't ideal, or the unzip.  Repeated the process of downloading.  Exactly the same error: "unable to copy Bass Clarinet Stacc Short.st3i"

Bummer.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Re: SampleTank updated to 3.5, new libraries available, Custom Shop functionality added, m 2015/03/27 11:50:21 (permalink)
When I got up this morning, the library files' download had completed, but the zip file was corrupt so I was unable to install them. I don't think I'll bother with a retry, given that the new instruments are not likely to be of interest to me anyway.

dub, I was able to navigate the instrument browser using only the keyboard (right-arrow to expand a category, left-arrow to collapse it, Enter or right-arrow to load an instrument), if that's what you mean. I could not figure out keypresses for paging through the browser (PgUp, PgDn do nothing), switching views, playing the virtual keyboard or adjusting any parameters.

Mesh, my motivation for buying ST3 was twofold: 1) ST2 was a favorite that no longer worked in my new 64-bit DAW, and 2) I was hoping ST3's long gestation meant either more or drastically better-sounding instruments.

I was satisfied on point 1, as it did import all my favorite ST2 libraries (I'm not sure all of them sound exactly the same, though). Point 2 was something of a disappointment, as sound quality varies from poor to mediocre to very good, and there aren't many instruments I didn't already have.

Bottom line is I spent hundreds of dollars to keep on using ST2 and Miroslav, plus picking up a handful of useful instruments. Those additions to my sound palette were enough to justify the expense, but just barely. I don't regret the purchase.

I installed the ST update first then the Sound Library update. Didn't have any issues and when I started 3.5 it spent several minutes rebuilding the DB. After that, Things seem to be working ok.

I did go to the Custom Shop to see what was available but didn't see anything that I wanted. Hopefully the future will bring more things that are my cup of tea.

The only difference will be in the stock library you would have with SE being smaller than the full version.  You won't lose other functionality.

Re: SampleTank updated to 3.5, new libraries available, Custom Shop functionality added, m 2015/03/27 14:32:13 (permalink)
Visting this forum last night after the session reminded me of the update, so I went back to the studio computer and proceeded to do it during the night not to lose any time.

Download of ST 3.5 and the library update (around 1.47 GB IIRC) took less than 5 minutes.

No issue whatsoever during installation. The library update even pointed to the correct (custom) folder. No authorization issue.

I then launched ST in standalone mode so that it could do its indexing thing, which took a while - I'd say maybe between 10-15 minutes. I do have all the other ST instruments/libraries and a couple of Sonic Reality add-ons, so I guess it's a lot to scan.

Haven't tested the new functionalities or the CS. As for the library, I'm using ST very sporadically, only for a couple of patches (electric Basses and, irregularly, a couple of Miroslav patches) so I couldn't tell.

I ran the installer for 3.5 and it hangs at 100% saying it's finalizing the install. Tried it twice - not sure what to do now. I have not installed the library update as I felt I should start with the ST 3.5 update.

PS: I have a fast connection, so the downloads were super quick.

IIRC, there are 3 different installs that happen for ST 3.5. ST 3.5, Auth Mgr., Custom shop. I wonder if it is possible that one of the other install windows got buried behind the initial window and you could not see it to finish the other installs?

I just spent some time with it on the desk machine and I had forgotten how good/fat it can sound. I actually have a smile on my face right now that I can't wipe off...

Just downloaded and installed 3.5; no problems.  Went to the IKM site and found a video highlighting the new features.  Here is a youtube version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJwBXZfnu1Q#t=157
The second half of the video (at about 2 minutes in) shows the new ST3.5 features; the first half focuses on the new EDM libraries.

So if you want to see what 3.5 offers, or the new 11 libraries, and want to see it before you download, check out the youtube video.  I did not find the new libraries to be something of interest to me (agree with bitflipper about them), but the highlights of the new ST3.5 features are at least informative.
