How much pure tracking can be done with a pad/tablet?

Hi guys,

I am looking into getting either an iPad or Tablet to double as a controller for Sonar etc. I would also like to be able to run a DAW on it purely for tracking via my RME UFX. (Yes, I know I won't be able to run Sonar on the iPad option).

As I do recordings for a living, I need to be very sure this is going to be super reliable and solid. Can anyone tell me:
What is a realistic track count that I could expect from the RME, a pad or tablet and en external HDD?
Also, what DAW would run well on a system like this as a tracking system? (no FX etc)

Thanks for your input!!

Cheers, Ludwig

I know the iPAD Air can record 32 simultaneous channels.
That's pretty decent for such a small/portable device.

Your UFX also has the ability to track directly to its USB port.

I've recorded 8 channels into Cubasis on an iPad air OK. As JIm says, the UFX can also record to a USB port though I've not tried that yet.

RME do an iPad totalmix app as well.

Thanks guys - I do use the RME Direct to USB as a backup, but it's crappy to navigate and play back/drop in etc. I'd like to have some sort of DAW running with 28 channels, ideally.

Jim, what software would the iPad Air then use for tracking - any idea?
And would it use an external HDD? Sorry, totally green with anything Mac..!

    Hi Ludwig,

    I have to correct myself.
I've had 32-channels of I/O with the iPAD Air...
Using Auria by WaveMachine Labs, you can record 24-channels simultaneously.
    http://auriaapp.com/Products/auria#AuriaFeatureList

It's not a full replacement for a desktop DAW, but Auria is pretty amazing for a tablet app.
I've not tried recording to external HD (not sure that's possible).
Make sure your iPAD has plenty of memory.  I'd want at least 64GB.
