Aggregate ASIO devices

I suspect this is a limitation imposed by the ASIO specification, and I was kind of surprised that a quick search here did not turn up similar requests, so that may be that.

Windows driver models allow me to mix and match audio I/O - for example I can use my Presonus 1818VSL as my main output, and my PODxt to track electric guitars, while the 1818VSL inputs are reserved for other sources.

I can't do that with ASIO, never could.

Is there ANY work-around available? ASIO drivers seem to get more love these days, and both Presonus and Line6 ASIO drivers are capable of lower latency operation. But that does me no good when I am using the POD as an input device.

My current work-around is to use WASAPI when tracking and then switch to ASIO for everything else, and if I have to I can live with that, but boy I'd love to skip that step!

Thanks!

I think it is a limitation of the spec - there are some interface product-specific cases where their drivers allow the daisy-chaining of identical interfaces, as expansion units to allow more inputs and outputs, but that's the only kind of way I am aware you can have anything like that in place with ASIO.

Certainly not interfaces from different vendors (as far as I have ever been aware), and likely not any cases where different interface models from the same product line, either.

I've read the ASIO SDK (still can't find the actual specification on the web)... there are no provisions for multiple devices, but I can't really see where they prohibit them either. I guess I need to dig through it again.

For those as curious as I am, here is a link to an excellent web pages about ASIO and Windows:

Here is a link to the V2.0 SDK:
    http://comp.ist.utl.pt/ec-ra/Laboratorio/ASIO%20SDK%202.pdf

And here is the current SDK:

I'm hoping one of the gurus at Cakewalk can sort this out!

And after all that a press release landed in my inbox this morning...

For the curious - check out ODeus Audio ASIO Link Pro.

It looks really interesting, and I'll be testing the demo version of it tonight!

Thanks for posting this.  I'll be watching to see how well this performs.  I don't need aggregation very often, but there are times it would be really handy.
