[CWBRN-566789] - Z-drag zooming bug

Sadly this one has carried over from X3 as was discussed a while back in the SONAR forum.

Summary: Z+Drag Zoom shows incorrect track selections when used below collapsed folders

Repro Steps:
  • Create a new project with at least 3 audio or MIDI tracks
  • Move at least two of the top tracks into a folder, leaving at least one track below the folder
  • Collapse the folder
  • Z+drag along any of the tracks below the collapsed folder to zoom in on that selection
Expected Results: Only the section that was dragged along should be zoomed.

Actual Results: Wildly unpredictable results.

Sometimes multiple tracks show, sometimes the track intended to be zoomed in on doesn't zoom but shows half of an expanded track above it.

However! If you expand the tracks in every folder above the track you're zooming in on, Z+drag works as intended.

This scenario works exactly the same for take lanes as well - any collapsed take lanes above the track you're zooming in on will cause unpredictable Z+drag selection zooms. Note: any collapsed take lanes or folders below the track you're Z+dragging in on makes no difference to the zoom, it will work as intended. It's ONLY zooming tracks below anything collapsed that produces this bug.

Workaround: keybind Z to Zoom to Selection. This is kind of backwards to holding down Z and dragging over what you want in that you select what you want first and then press Z and then that gets you the same results which actually do work as intended.

Now that I've set up the workaround I'm getting around a lot quicker but it was nearly a dealbreaker for me before because I work really quickly that way. It'd be a shame too because the new SONAR is a BIG improvement in heaps of other areas. (Hooray for the updated Audiosnap!)

Yes, I think it's the same as this one:
    http://forum.cakewalk.com/Want-This-Fixed-2-Zoom-Tool-doesn39t-zoom-in-correctly-m3036768.aspx

Maybe it's very difficult to fix, because multiple features are involved in it (Auto Track Zoom, track folders, and Take lanes, at least).

    Yep, that's pretty much it!

It looks like it's manifested itself after take lanes were introduced. I didn't use X1 or X2 much but on the 8.x series, this all worked correctly. That makes sense because a few other people have had similar bugs that sound like they're related to this one. Some kind of track enumeration bug or something?

Thankfully that workaround with the keybinding I did gets a good lot of the usability back for me.

Hi, I missed your workaround. I've just looked for "Zoom to Selection" in Preferences > Customization > Keyboard Shortcuts but couldn't locate it (checked both "Global Bindings" and "Track View" lists). Where did you find the command?

    OK, try this:

    • Go to Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts
    • Press the Locate Key
    • Press Z
    • In the Search box, type Show and Fit Selection
    • Select that and press the Bind key
    • Press OK to exit

To use this, left-drag to select as many tracks as you like, and then press Z. Whatever was selected will be zoomed in on. ALT+Z to go back to the previous view (I did a keybinding for U for this to have it similar to 8.x since I'm so used to it).

    Hope that helps!

I've just tried the workaround and it does work when selecting tracks, but it still fails to work properly 1) when selecting Take lanes, or 2) when Auto Track Zoom is enabled...

Yep, that's correct. It fails when zooming into Take Lanes (which I still find a little annoying compared to layers, personally) and I don't use Auto Track Zoom.

Just tested it then and you're right - that's pretty awful! I guess the workaround there is to either do stuff manually if you prefer to do Z zooming or use Auto Track Zoom, just not both at once.

But yeah, if the core issue was addressed then I'd be more than happy to ditch the workarounds.

    Yes!

I just listed this one for 2015 as well...

It did come with the Lanes release and I have been reporting it ever since...

Thanks for the workaround idea. As I never use the Z option itself, I have a feeling this will work fine for the time being...

As to zooming Lanes? Another issue of Lanes that has kept me from appreciated them. There are a few comping tools that have come to lanes which I enjoy, but they are not worth the loss of the lasso zoom and ability to zoom a layer as large as I need... This seriously needs addressing as it's an in-my-face kind of thing as its used so often...

    Please!

Yeah, absolutely - that's a real killer. I'd love to lasso around a bunch of take lanes the way we did with layers and be able to zoom in to do precise edits. It's very fiddly how it is now.

I guess a lot of people find they can see their clips well enough for you their edits... Not so for me. I don't have perfect eyesight, but I need to magnify my data quite a bit for many of the edits I do and the lane height limitation forces me to make approximate edits, then clone the track, archive and hide the original, delete all the unused clips and close the lanes, then re-edit all the clips in track display to do the fine work...

A lot of extra chores I could do without...

    Hi Lord Tim,
This is actually a known issue, but has not been fixed as of yet. I've submitted your report to development, and you should be updated if there are any changes made to the status of the bug.

    Thanks!
