UPDATE ON PARTIAL FIX FOR DRUM MAP!
HOT OFF THE PRESSES! I figured out a pretty fool-proof way to remedy the problem of when you have to delete a softsynth that you're using for 1 of your drum maps. Well, consider this. So, I'm a pretty demanding drummer when it comes to having access to A LOT of varied sounds. However, for 95% of my projects I only use 1 kick, 1 snare, 1 similarly tuned group of toms, maybe up to 7 cymbals. And for percussion, I'll get to that in a sec. Here's my point. What I've started doing is creating a map for not JUST a kick, or snare, etc., but create a map of snares for every sound module you have. Now, if you have different snares in the same song, then create different tracks, and use another map for the other sound module.
For instance, my Alesis Fusion 8HD has WONDERFUL, AWESOME sounds, but their drums samples have very bad velocity sensitivity. IT SUX...SUX BAD. Another problem it has is when I hit play in Sonar at any given time, any particular track will trigger an unwanted, unchosen Alesis sample. Sometimes, I have to hit, and re-hit PLAY until the right sample plays. WAAAY IRRITATING! However, not irritating enough that I want to completely stop using it, especially the toms, which more often than not the velocity sensitivity isn't anywhere NEAR as critical as the snare.
Now, stick with me. I also have SampleTank, which has (for the most part) great sounds, but also has great velocity sensitivity. So, I've created a map called SampleTank Snares, ST Kicks, ST Toms. On the other hand, I can't find a set of toms on ST that sounds as good as some of my Alesis toms, so I also created a map for Alesis Toms.
As for cymbals, I lucked out on the fact that Dimension Pro has an AWESOME PROG. of Multi-Velocity cymbals that number probably 30 cymbals, as well as hi-hats. So, I didn't even create a map for that. I just locked in Dim Pro on the Hi-Hat, and Cymbal tracks in Sonar, and BOOM (or rather CRASH) it's there.
As for percussion, again my Alesis has STUNNING, CLEAN sounds, and very few of them require much velocity sensitivity, so I created a map called Alesis Orchestral Sounds. Of course, I simply used the Cakewalk-provided GM Orchestral map, which pretty closely mirrors my Alesis, and then I added some extra sounds just for good measure.
So the BIG point here...FINALLY, is if you have to delete a synth for whatever reason, then, when you go back and need to use that particular drum map all you have to do is INSERT the softsynth, then pull up the map, and choose that softsynth in the dropdown. In fact, in my SampleTank, I created an entire instance/preset using all 16 channels of the GUI exclusively for drums. Now, imagine how many sounds you can get out of that?
Hope this solution helps everyone as much as it did me. I can just hear the screaming multitudes. Yes, Yes. You're too kind.
