New Pugtones Tune--WARP SPEED (iwanna)

This is a song that I wrote and played live in the 90s acoustically.  I wanted Mark to hear it and I sent one acoustic guitar track and one vocal track.  He sent back this electric arrangement.  I think it's the way I always heard it even when we were playing acoustically.   We wanted a keyboard and I had just heard one of Tim Smith's(Starise) tunes and asked him for some keyboard help.  He agreed and here's how it ended up.  We appreciate his collab and enjoyed working with him.  We are open to all comments.  TIA for listening.So, here is;

Mark Cline- Drums, guitars (lead and rhythm), arrangement
Warren Willingham- Bass, Vocals

Cool tune, and very well done.  Drums and bass really set up a nice groove for the keys and guitar to play around.  Really liked it!

    oh yea,
    nice boogie,
    a little shuffle goin on,
i like the bridges, takes you on a bit of a side journey....
i think the 'key modulation' is a bit abrupt...

if you were going to re-arrange it,
what i'd do, is take that bridge, with the backup vocals,
and just hit that first note of the bridge with the vox, and hold that one note for about a whole measure,
let it die out, and then immediately hit that key modulation

you could 'creatively' do this with editing, without re-tracking anything,
you'd just have to open up a measure right before the modulation,
cut and paste a section from the bridge, apply some creative envelopes and use a long delay and reverb on the tail of the cut and paste to do the 'tie-over' into the key modulation..

i mean, we put a man on the moon in 1969, surely we can do some micro edits!!!

    LOL

    anyway, i dig this tune.

Phil-Thanks for listening and the kind comments.  We appreciate it.

Rob- I'm reading this over and over and am trying to visualize exactly how that would sound.  Just now, it clicked about halfway.  Of course Mark would have to do it since he has the whole project.  I'll keep reading.  Thanks for taking the time to listen and make these suggestions.  All we are doing is waiting to shine.

well, i'm just talking out loud here.......!
and there's nothing wrong with it as is,
i just put on my producer hat for a moment,
and it takes over my body!
    LOL

i have made arrangement changes on several of my tunes,
AFTER i swore that i had it down, and was fully committed..
the more i 'change' things after that point,
the braver i get with making arrangement changes, even adding in entire sections that never existed in the song before,
after i had finished the project.

one of the beauties of working in DAW, is being able to do stuff like that......
no different than cutting tape back in the all analog days.....
think what the floyd did with some of their songs?!@\###

    anyway,
    just floating ideas

I really appreciate that, Rob.  You are one of my musical heroes and your ideas are stellar, imho.  I never have a problem with suggestions like this.  Keep 'em coming.  I don't know if I have the skills to do it, but I'll sure as heck try!  Loves dem Floyd boys!  BTW, I'd like a picture with that "Hat body".  LOL

Cool blues Warren - Good shout on the keys, it adds a nice extra dimension to the mix. For me personally I would liked to have heard the vocals a little more 'up front' for just a hair of extra vibe, but that's just me ;)

    Like it!!.   Very cool.....

It does sound like everything is mono though.   The impression is that there is no clear separation or space for the keys and guitar.  Some more panning would bring more clarity to those parts.

Might also add a modulator to the BGV to make them pop out a little more.  Nicely done though.

Chris- You know, I had trouble with the vocals on this.I don't know why.  I sang it live for years but other people were doing the harmonies, etc.  I actually asked Mark to cover me on some sections.  That might be why it seemed quiet at times.  Hey,   Thanks for listening and commenting.  It's nice to have you on the board.   A great addition!

Gentlemen, this has all the elements that I like in a good rock song.  The performances and arrangement are very good.  Warren, I think you sang this with feeling, and it made me feel happy inside.  Guitar and keyboard - like butter!

Here we go.Love the transpositions up and down.

I would definitely like to hear to vocals up in the mix, they are good enough to be clearly featured. I think the big mono comment someone else made was something else I noticed, but the song still holds together very well without being super duper stereo.

Maybe suck a little bass out? I think the bass has a little hair on it, a little fuzz maybe? If so, it's cool but it also might be mudding it up just a little?

nice one! cool collab and cool song indeed!

    cheers,

That felt like funk where those bass notes play up the scale on the up and downbeats.
Keyboards added to the funk feeling too. I like the Peter Pan references especially the "lost boy" segments. Nice collab.

ok....I'm back in the saddle and so glad you guys are doing the same. Really like the movement on this baby! I really love the chord changes and the lead is killer. I really would like to hear your "I wanna move at Warp speed" line bumped up a bit...not volume wise but timing wise (moved forward in the mix).

shoot me an email and maybe I can do a quick mix if you shoot me the cwb to show you what I mean.

Outstanding performances, great arrangement, overall cool song.

Minor critique: imo vocal's need a tad more focus/presence in the mix.

Lynn- Thanks, buddy.  We appreciate the listen and the kind comments!

Tom (ES)- Thanks for listening and commenting.  You know, I sang this song live for years and it got good response.  Years later, I couldn't get the vocal right and asked Mark to do "cover ups" for me.  I just didn't feel comfortable on this one.  Thanks for the nice words and suggestions!

Mark(no99)- Sorry I skipped you, buddy.  Your post is between two picture dudes and I missed it.  SORRY, because I do appreciate your opinions.  We might work on this song again but I had such a hard time with it I thought we'd put it away for awhile after this.  you brought up some good points.  Thanks!!

Dena (Venus)- Girl, there is a whole in this board where you used to hang out.  We miss your music and your participation.  Thanks for listening and commenting.  Remember, I'm always ready for a collab with you.  We love ya, Dena. Ha, I knew you'd like the Peter Pan thing!

Home run guys.  Y'all have a great groove going on between the rhythm guitars and the bass.  It really caries this song in to that gritty Bluesy feel.  Just like the old Blues guys were doing in the early electronic Blues days you have some interesting fx and BGV's and accents that take this on some interesting directions.
Doggone cool stuff guys  --- a home run!!!!
    Luv it!!

Good fun. A live feel for sure. The mono-ish balance adds to that feel. Nice dynamics and harmonies. Well sung tho I could dig some more intensity there. Excellent guitar work. Interesting chords.  Not sure the ending is consistent with the rest tho?

Gus- Thanks for listening and commenting.  I too love Mark's guitar tines.  He worked a long time getting just what he likes.  It just so happens that a lot of like it.  Thanks!!!

SongCraft- Thanks for listening and commenting.  I specifically asked Mark to allow enough vocals through to get the idea.  I had a big problem getting what I wanted and have it on my list to re do vocals when I get my voice back.  I'm glad you liked the song!

Wayne- Ha!  "USE THE WARP, WAYNE .  USE THE WARP"! Thanks for listening!!!

Freddy-  Thanks, buddy.  We appreciate your comments.  When are you doing a new one?

MGM- Thanks for listening and commenting.  Funny thing, I asked Mark to add the delay on the end because I used to use a delay on the very last note when our quartet performed live.  It gave an amazing whack to the end of the song.  It isn't the same here but I still like it.  I do understand what your are saying too.  Thanks!

Daryl- Thanks for listening.  I actually started a PM to you to see if the current Mrs.Daryl would sing this one.  I just never felt comfortable on the vocals this time around.  Maybe on another song if she, and you, would join us on a tune.
