Loud Pop from distortion plugin when I save + meter stuck at +9db

Hi!

I have problems with 2 plugins, Studio Devil VGAII and Cakewalk vocal strip.

It does this after a couple of minute, like something is builting up.

When I hit save I hear a loud pop in the speaker and the meter stay stuck at +9db, with no continuous sound, just stock. Nothing goes through as it seem to mute the track.

If I delete it and reinsert another instance it does the same. I need to restart Sonar.

On the vocal strip, it seem to be related to the eq, or the overdrive algo in it, which... is it made by Studio Devil?

Well it's a shame cause I get my absolute favorite guitar metal tone with the VGAII and the vocal strip is THE absolute best plugin I've tried for black vocals...

Thanks for your help!

Interesting, I kept it off on purpose to avoid issues.

I'll try that and report back, thanks!

I used to have "the Vocal Strip problem" but have not had it since updating to Platinum. However, I don't recall this being addressed as a specific fix in the list of fixes. I think I remember someone mentioning that they deleted the AUD.INI file and the Vocal Strip pop went away...or maybe it's that they re-installed the Vocal Strip and it went away.

I'd be curious if others have experienced this issue in Platinum. BTW - I use Vocal Strip all the time and I'm mostly white, so I think the Vocal Strip has relatively eclectic musical tastes

ahaha yeah I meant "black METAL vocals"!!! The plugin seem to also be secular! (just found this word... cool what we can learn here loll!)

    I'm white too so i can't tell!

Well I never had problem with the vocal strip before but it started in x2 for studio devil's vgaII and never went away...

I wrote to cakewalk about this but never heard back, studio devil say it work perfectly with Live.... not sure that's what I wanted to hear but still good to know I guess...

Maybe this plugin is not popular enough to get attention, too bad cause it's definitely one of the best, I use it over Brainworx Rockrack when I feel like rebooting Sonar every 10-12 save...

Connected or not, I can't say, but I experience a similar phenomenon since Cambridge, whereby if I initiate a file save whilst playback is happening, I get a short, intense burst of noise and meter(s) stuck on some silly high level. I didn't have time to investigate, so I can't even say which plugs were involved or implicated. When it happens again, I'll be more analytic and report in.

I get the same thing with Channel Tools...if I try to use it in an existing project.  Although I can insert it into a new project.

I've had this in vocal strip in Platinum.

However, I use vocal strip a lot, 99% of the time without this happening. But once it starts to happen on a given project, it happens a lot. So obviously Vocal Strip is interacting negatively with some other setting or property somewhere.

so far I suspect Prochannel (concrete limiter maybe) and vst2/vst3 relationship but Prochannel is the main suspect...

I use the concrete limiter in every project so I wouldn't suspect it.

I am seeing this issue but with other plugins, together with a loud POP, peaked VU meters and audio engine who will only output DC. Here´s my first thread on the subject:

However, I have not been able to isolate this issue to a certain plugin.

For some reasons I cannot open the link you provided.

I'm still seeing this issue on the project I'm working on right now, when I bypass the plugins or simply mute the busses where the tracks affected by this are routed, the sound come back. Otherwise the whole audio engine become silent.

When I reboot Sonar 2-3 times tings tend to go back to normal until the next POP.

I'll look further into this soon, cause it's pretty much the only bug I'm experiencing right now. Sonar is on track to become the most solid piece of software I use!

My bad, the link was corrupted. Now it should work fine.

    My findings so far:
    * Disabling all FX (by the FX button) fixes the problem
    * Disabling only all Prochannel strips improves things a lot but the problem is still there.

I found out that the easiest way for me to get Sonar back online after the pop is to disable & enable the FX by using the FX button. Sonar also seems to be able to run a little bit longer without the pop issue.

Same for me, btw. If only this bug gets removed, I would be very happy with Sonar.

Agreed - if this one bug got nailed Sonar would be fantastic for me. Each time a new update comes out I hope it is fixed, but no luck so far. It's hard to nail down. I've tried stripping down projects that exhibit the problem, but I can't find a simple project that will exhibit the issue repeatably. I wonder how else we can track this down?

Noel, if you read this, what can we do to help find this bug?

    Cheers, Peter.

Ohhh for the first time I'm able to reproduce this problem 100% of the times!

Please confirm you can do this as well so I can send a problem report.

    Here's how I do:

    TURN YOUR SPEAKER VOLUME DOWN!
    Create a new blank project
    Insert an audio track
    Insert VX-64 Vocal Strip
    Activate the Tube Eq section
    Clone that track 4 times

For me, this create the issue everytime!

Please someone confirm it is reproductible, if so maybe cakewalk will be able to find the problem.

It also happen on other occasions than cloning tracks but maybe that will be enough to track the issue!

Mmm I can't reproduce it on Windows 10... it seems to only work in windows 7 so far.... or maybe I broke something else while searching that made the steps above trigger it. I'll need to check back after a reboot

I tried your recipe on Windows 10 (Newburyport) and Windows 7 (Foxboro) and no luck I'm afraid.

If it always happens for you on Win7 but not Win10, there might be a difference between settings in the various ini files.

This is a tricky bug to nail down - I've been chasing it with a hammer for quite a few months now :)

Right, it seems that disabling plugins only decreases the probability of the bug occuring rather than disabling it entirely.

What about exporting audio? I have projects which don´t engage this bug at all until I export audio, then it appears.

I typically experience this bug while mixing. I can't isolate any particular action, but usually changing plugin settings (Ozone or Sonitus reverb are the most common). But it can happen only on export. The way I usually know it has happened on export is when the wav file turns up silent. The wav file is not full of zeros though; it contains the largest negative integer as every value, in other words, DC. I can see this by importing the wav file into another program (Matlab). However, I use Ozone on the master bus most of the time. I don't know what values would be in the wav file otherwise.
