Looking for Recommendations Large Monitor with VGA Connections
All, I've been a dual monitor guy for some time and my second monitor just died on me. It was connected directly to my DAW computer, whereas my primary monitor is connected to both my DAW and my Office apps computer using a KVM with VGA connections. I'm considering just going with a larger monitor and only using one so I can enjoy a big screen on both, and looking for recommendations on something that will work using my KVM. Initial research it looks like a lot of larger monitors don't support standard VGA, but I could be wrong about that. Looking for suggestion on something in the 32" (or maybe even larger if I can afford it). I'd like to keep it in the $500 range too, but might push a bit higher if something nice is available. Thanks,

Re: Looking for Recommendations - New KVM for DVI or Display Port

Actually, think I may have answered my own question. Looks like if I want to upgrade my monitor I'll need a new KVM, and probably a new video card for my other PC. Still need more info on the topic, as there seem to be DVI and Display Port KVM options, so I need to figure out which will work best for my setup. DAW has an AMD Radeon HD 5450, and I think it supports either option. So... anyone have any experience with DVI or Display Port KVMs and have an opinion to share? I'm looking at monitors that are either 32" 2560x1440 or 34" 2560x1080.

I just bought a pair of 27" monitors with vga. Don't know if that's too small for you.

You can pick up a 32" HDTV that will have HDMI and VGA ports, for about $175, and I got my 40" one for $219. I run 2 large HDTV's for computer monitors - one is 40" and the other is 32". One is connected with HDMI, and the other via VGA, all off of the on-board graphics. Works GREAT, with zero issues. Hope that helps, Bob Bone

Remember that if you are looking to make your monitor larger, you are not going to be happy unless you also make your monitor resolution finer. Connecting a very large monitor to a standard VGA output delivering the original VGA standard resolution 320 x 200 is going to give you a pixellated mosaic instead of a readable screen. The VGA connector does not define the resolution, and the signal is analog not digital, so there is a potential for a significant loss of quality as the signal gets noisy and the monitor makes the translation to its native resolution. What is acceptable for a cheap LED TV, where most of what you are watching is moving blobs of color, will probably not cut it if you plan to read fine print for hours.

yes, that's important to discover what your chosen tv/monitor can do... my insignia has inputs/outputs for Component video, Composite video, Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Universal Serial Bus (USB), in addition to 1080 x 1920 (1080p resolution) and digital audio outputs do your homework first.

After researching it a bit, I'll stick with what I've got and possibly go with a second monitor to replace the one that died if it starts driving me nuts too much. I think for the resolution I would want I'd need to go with a decent monitor with a proper DVI KVM switch and that would get rather expensive. I only really need the extra space when I'm on my DAW, so a secondary monitor that connects only to that makes more sense at this point. Plus I've spent a bit too much on other things lately, so I kinda blew my mad money for the time being. Thanks again everyone!
