Out of the blue 'radio request'..thoughts?

Got this email today;

''Dear Griffiths&Wilkinson,

I found some of your music profiles online and hope it's alright to contact you this way.

I'm an A&R representative at SRL Networks in London, an artist relations company representing top emerging musicians around the world. We are looking for new music for our radio network, music licensing catalog and artist promotion/development roster, and I was wondering if you would be interested in sending us some music for consideration.

Subject to a successful review, SRL Networks will get your music heard by entertainment industry professionals and fans all over the world, and help facilitate music licensing and distribution deals, live events bookings, record label/music publisher deals and more. You will receive a detailed agreement once your music is accepted.

You can find out more about us at...link...

To submit music, send your best track in mp3 format, a professional photo and a link to your website to ...link...You can also include a short recorded message to introduce yourself to Skunk Radio Live's listeners. ''

Here's the actual site (I took the links out of the email copy just in case)

Any thoughts? Judging by the 'Griffiths&Wilkinson', I'm guessing they found our ancient 'Acrobat's Supper' Soundclick page.

Janet had someone contact her from her soundclick profile and it sounded similar to this.  it was 4 years ago that she sent them something for consideration and she just recently said that something finally came out of it and she received some money from it.  it was only like $175 or something, so it wasn't much.
I don't know if it was the same company or outfit you're talking about above, tho.

It could be that you have been picked out of the cloud by someone willing to invest time and money into making you famous in return for the warm wonderful feeling they get from helping out a promising artist. Or it could be that there is so much money sloshing around the music business that such promoters can make a good living on finders fees from third parties. Or it could be that this is the musical equivalent of the Nigerian prince.

When recording companies were in ascendance it was possible to find promoters who would claim to be able to make you a star in exchange for some up front money to shop your demo, but since the record companies are now spending very little indeed to promote their acts, and signing ever fewer acts to promote, the word is self-promotion. And the people who have the know how to separate artists from their savings in return for services of dubious career benefit are multiplying like rats in a landfill. Be very careful what you are being asked to provide, not just in cash but in rights.

James, You and Tim are certainly good enough to warrant label interest. Not sure these are the guys to make it happen though. Due diligence my friend, and good luck.

That's about 10x more than I've ever made from selling downloads on SC and the like . I couldn't even give my last 'album' away.

Thanks David. We're both 55 years old and about as cynical as it's possible to be, so won't be leaping into anything.

Thanks Randy, that's kind of you. Judging by their abysmal website, I think you're probably right.

Re: Out of the blue 'radio request'..thoughts? 2015/04/06 17:36:21 (permalink)
No harm in submitting IF the fine print checks out in favor of the writers/performers, you own the rights exclusively and no 'royalty free' streaming.

Wish you all the best!

Last year I was approached by an independent Internet radio station, they love my work, said it fits their radio format perfectly and wanted me to submit.  They recently contacted me yet again.  The radio station has very strong views in regards to supporting community -- Egalitarian principles.

Unless it leads to commercial ((terrestrial radio - not solely Internet based)). At the moment its seems somewhat surreal. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Anyway, proceed with caution:
Find out if the radio station business is ethical, legitimate and may lead to terrestrial radio and other opportunities.

About two years ago I removed all my works from a distributor for three reasons, (1) yearly recurring fees, (2) lack of good marketing options and (3) I should have not put all my best works in the one basket 'with' too much to follow up on to recoup my investment and make a decent profit/income. Kind of like I had put the cart before the horse.

Writer services did suggest to me years ago, to not put all my works up (full length tracks) on music sites - specifically sites that stream 'Royalty Free'.  Y/T is best used in regards to proceeding with a 'marketing strategy in mind' rather than 'uploading all works in mind'.

Distribution to pay-per-stream music sites paid me about $0.02 to $4.00 each 'over a 12 month period', estimated earnings: $20. Terrestrial radio would have paid much more than that. Compared to Internet based streaming I earned 5 times that in CD sales -- that format isn't idea for me unless I can form a new band in about 2 seconds and do about 3 gigs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN ....

I have never felt comfortable with the live scene, the overhead costs, travel, the spotlight, the hype that surrounds it and stalkers.

Though the good also potentially comes with the bad  - sorry for the rant!
