Midi Drums - 'Ghost' notes

Hey All,

I am recording a Roland electronic drums set through MIDI.  I seem to be getting a lot of very low velocity notes showing up.  Let say in the range of 1-30 or so.  I am not sure if these are false triggers.

Is there are way to delete all notes below a certain velocity?

Cheers, Mike

    Edit > Select by Filter

Or put the MIDI Event Filter MFX with a velocity cutoff on the track so you don't hear them being echoed to the drum module or whatever soft synth you're using while performing, and then apply the FX after recording to whack them.

But you should look into why the kit's sending them in the first place.

Check your technique when playing. If you allow the stick to bounce on the head, this will send the ghost notes.

Also check your trigger settings on the V-drums kit ... it could well be that hitting the snare triggers toms and vice versa and thus causes all the extra MIDI notes which are not intended ghosts ... it depends on your set-up (e.g. pads could be mounted too close together) and your playing style

I would first check the trigger monitoring display on the v-drums module and see if you get additional triggers at low velocity when you hit a pad/cymbal (you might have them ever since but never heard them on the v-drums because the v-drums kits do a good job of hiding them) ...

If the kit set-up is all good and you still get them, you might have to adapt a different playing style ... or have these MIDI filters in place ...

    To All,

Thanks for those great reply's.  I think there are two things that are going to help.
1 - Change velocity map on the Drums to resemble a 'S' curve that way the low value notes will go to zero.  I can also adjust the Crosstalk setting in the drum module.

2 - Use Process -> De-glitch from Sonar to zero out any low value notes.

Hey Mike. I know this is an old post but it describes exactly the problem I'm having with my VDrums. Did you ever find a solution? Thanks. -- Billy
