Rediscovering an Oldie but newly-appreciated Goodie

This will be very old news to many of you, but I've just discovered a new appreciation for an old tool that's been sitting here idle for years: Audio Damage's Rough Rider compressor.

I have a tune-in-progress that grew out of a solo jam while evaluating the excellent Renaxxance nylon guitar library from Indiginus. This Kontakt instrument is a LOT of fun and invites live jamming - at a mere 45 bucks I don't hesitate to recommend it. This coming week there'll be a new version that makes it even better. But Renaxxance isn't the topic of this post. It's about vocal leveling through aggressive compression.

I've always been reluctant to let a compressor take care of leveling out a vocal track on its own. If the raw levels are too wildly varied, it's not possible to apply settings that are appropriate for both loud and quiet bits. Consequently, I do a lot of hand-leveling with gain automation to get the track into the ballpark and then let a compressor (usually Pro-C) do the rest.

This particular vocal track, though, was worse than usual. I'd sung it into a cheap Sennheiser stage mike while playing the guitar part on the keyboard, at times too close to the mike, sometimes off-axis or not even facing the microphone. I wasn't thinking in terms of a potential keeper track, so it was even sloppier than normal. Only later did I decide to try and salvage the vocal.

At first, I tried my usual method: hand-leveling with gain automation, then Pro-C in parallel mode. But this proved unacceptable. The volumes were just all over the place and it was going to take an enormous amount of editing, making me think I'd just have to re-take the vocal.

Enjoying a challenge, I then tried another trick that has worked for me under similar circumstances, Meldaproduction's MAutoVolume. That helped a lot. Here's a picture of a short phrase comparing the original vocal loudness (black line) with the result of applying MAutoVolume (red line):

Then for grins, I started sticking in various compressors just to see if I could possibly do better. Eventually I came to Rough Rider. Here's what that plugin did for the same phrase, after some tweaking (fast attack, medium release):

This is the flattest volume I've ever gotten by plugins alone. Now, I know what you're thinking: this probably sounds like crap. Smashing a track like that must surely make it sound robotic and dull. But in this case, that didn't happen. Noticeable distortion was introduced, but it wasn't unpleasant. The only downside was that the vocal became more sibilant, requiring a de-esser after. Overall, I really liked the in-yer-face crispiness, even though this isn't a rocker, it's a ballad.

I thought this was a pretty awesome result for a free plugin. If you've never tried Rough Rider, grab it here. Yes, there is a 64-bit version.

(BTW, the screenshots above are from the Loudness tab of the very useful MMultiAnalyzer analyzer plugin.)

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Got it - Thanx!

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

I have had the Rough Rider for a while (v. 1.0.0.1 !) but have never used it on vocals, just guitar mostly.  I wasn't aware they had upgraded to 64-bit either.  So thanks again on both counts!

I keep getting a 404 no link for free download of Rough Rider.

while Rough Rider Pro is $39.00 and probably worth it I am not shopping for a paid compressor at this time.

I was interested in the freebie to check out the compressor as well as Audio Damage, I don't have any of Chris's plugins.

I just downloaded the 64 bit version and got that a few times initially too.  Try again.  Might take a few times and maybe a page reload (F5)

Thanks for sharing this. May have to give this a shot. I have mostly alternating between ca2a and the opto compressor that comes with t-racks for this task.

That might do it to cclarry, but I was able to download without registering, it just took a few tries to get it.  Have to say they have the coolest "404" page I think I've ever seen!

Just browse to their home page and then using their search/links navigate back to Rough Rider (free) - that seemed to work for me without refreshing or registering.

Rough Rider Pro, as noted above, is the fancier, paid version. It's three Rough Rider compressors in one package, which can either be configured as a multi-band comp or as three broadband comps in series.

It also adds an important feature that the free version lacks: labels on the controls. With it, you can put in specific ratios and attack and release times, whereas the freebie makes you guess.

You may have noticed that both free and paid versions offer compression ratios up to 1000 (!) to 1. I can't imagine what one would need that for, but somebody must have figured out a reason for it. Serious audio damage would be my guess.

Both versions offer a minimum attack time of 100 us, so this caveat applies to both: if you turn the attack all the way counter-clockwise it's gonna distort! I am running it with a fast attack (not minimum but actual time is unknown due to lack of labels), which is undoubtedly why I'm hearing distortion. However, as I said before, the distortion isn't unpleasant. Crunchy, like you'd expect from a field-effect transistor. Or a Green Day lead vocal.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Rough Rider free has been a go to comp for me for years. I was inspired enough to get the pro version, but was really more happy and at ease with the free plug. Use it before Heacase to get sustain and feedback that shouldn't be happening at room level volumes. Noticed that the combination of Rough Rider free into HeadCase cause the strings to resonate in your hands into semi feedback loops. Not natural in a good way.  Have found no other current software chain that will remotely achieve the effect. Any you guys got HeadCase, try it.

Downside to the free version is the makeup volume with extreme compression. Comes up short if you need the drive. My easy fix is inserting Sonalksis FreeG between Rough Rider and whatever downstream. Very simple clean, transparent gain control that all should have.

Had the RR years ago, and lost it along the way somehow. Thanks for helping me rediscover it. It's killer on the right material. Makes a kick drum come to life.

Hah! Good thread Bit! I have used Rough Rider for ages and love how agressive it is! It's the only compressor I also use for creative purposes. The Nuke-preset is always fun!

But at some point I have bought the Pro version, but somehow forgotten all about ut until right this very moment So thanks for reminding me that I have a lisence for the souped up version of this great compressor!

One thing I always to is setting up a bus with Rough Rider insterted, set it to some extreme levels and have a send from the drum bus going into it - the entire kit - on full blast then adjust the level of the Rough Rider bus to taste. It does some really awesome things and works well on both acoustic and electric drums. It's also quite interesting to send the vocal bus into it when dealing with in-yer-face vocals. But now that I think about it, I will also try to do that on some tender singing to see what it can do.

Especially since I now remember I have the pro-version
