"Sunday" K.D. Lang cover

Arguably the best female pop vocalist of the past 25 years, K.D. Lang performed her song "Sunday" in London a few years ago.   I loved the feel of the song so much I had to attempt to deconstruct it from the DVD, Instrument by instrument and then lured Bryony Purdue into covering the vocals. She's just hit her 22nd birthday and has so much potential.

Anyway, here's our version of Katherine D's moody song...

Not heard the original either but this has some nice arrangement and production touches, your vocalist has a cool voice.  The mix could do with a few tweaks here and there, the bass resonates in places and get a little mixed up with the vocal but that could just be me being a little picky.

I'm very familiar with K.D. Lang, and your vocalist has captured the tone and feel of her vocal.  Overall, the production sounds good here.  Nice job!

Thanks for listening Optimus and Synkrotron.

Wookiee: Thank you for your observations. Mixing and Mastering is a bit like learning completely new instruments and a skill one continues developing with experience and time. Always good to have another pair of ears.

Praise indeed coming from you Lynn.

Plenty more to come from Bryony.

I thought you guys did a wonderful job on this. Really captures the KD vibe. I think the bass sounds okay, but the first organ (that pans left and right) could use some toning down just a touch. It gets overpowering in spots.

Love all of the other instrumentation and Bryony can sing!

I've never heard the original version, but I liked this!  Really cool feel and the vocal has a great intimate tone - nice job capturing it.  Other than the bass getting lost here and there under the pad (organ + epiano?) I think the mix sounds good.   Liked the organ solo.

Covering a KD Lang  song is a huge undertaking for any vocalist.... that's a really high bar..... but this lady pretty much nailed it.

Well done in  every aspect of the recording.  Kudo's to you all and most especially the singer,  Bryony Purdue.  Quite the voice.

Dan: Thanks so much - I will re-visit the organ levels. Very useful to have your valued critique.

Steve: Ditto and great to have your feedback. I learn so much from other people.

Guitar Hacker: Wow, great stamp of approval coming from you. Bryony is[link=#] thrilled[/link] with your and everyones comments.

Conclusion: I learnt something from this. Kathryn Dawn Lang is a unique talent and I believe Bryony has the potential to become a great vocalist in her own right. But why try to beat perfection? Nobody can match Lang's interpretation of her own song. Which is why Bryony told me, quite rightly,  that she would give her interpretation
    rather than try to imitate.
Anyway, I always learn so much form deconstructing and rebuilding someone else's work. It's very good training and I thoroughly recommend it.

Isn't that how we compose? We simply cherry-pick our favourite bits of music, riffs beats licks etc, that we've gathered throughout our lives and then re-interpret and construct in a form that we believe is original? The beautifully infinite mutlifaceted musical jigsaw puzzle that keeps us creating...
