Please Refer Me to Best Value in Studio Mics

Hey, everyone. I am looking to buy two inexpensive all purpose studio mics.

I am looking at a large diaphragm condenser mic.

I will use them for room mics on drums and guitar cabs.

I will use them for close mic'ing guitar cabs.

I already have to AKG C4000B large diaphragm mics that we use for overhead mics on the kit.

So here are my first two choices...Rode NT1-A or AKG P420.

Please let me know what you think, thanks.

Purrrfect Audio LLC Pro Studio, Sonar X3e PE X64, Win7 Pro 64Bit - Dell Inspiron 1760, Sonar 7 PE X64, Win7 Pro 64Bit - iZotope Ozone 5 & Alloy 2 - MOTU Audio Express & 2 MOTU 8Pre - Glyph & Lacie External HDs - Roland A-800Pro - Mackie MR5mkIII - Shure - AKG - Sennheiser

Most importantly...not enough time.

    CAD M179.

Variable-Pattern, so great for all kinds of uses.  Inexpensive.  One of the few "budget" mics generally thought very highly of.

I've a stereo pair of Rodes, they're not bad at all for the price.

For guitar amps I'd suggest an SM57 as being the best low price choice though (in fact one of the best for that use at any price).

For overheads and acoustic instruments small diaghram condensors might be a better way to go,

Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

I like the Blue Microphones line which has a price range of 200 bucks upward to 5000.  I have been using the Blue Bluebird which is an all purpose mic.  I use it for vocals and it produces great results and costs about 300 bucks.

SM 57 FOR CLOSE MICING GUITAR CABS.

it's been used on a million recordings, a lot of classic recordings, timeless recordings....

    and a few new ones.
    LOL

a BUDGET mic that you would use on a guitar cab, most times will NOT work for a room mic.

a large condenser would probably fill the bill for that,
but a BUDGET mic is just not going to sound that good for a good ROOM mic.

    in other words,
you will make a great compromise on your room mics,
if you don't put some budget into it.

    otherwise,
    just get one of these:

and move on until you can save up enough money to get something really worth while.

    personally,
i have moved away from using mics for most of my electric guitar recording.
    i use a Palmer PDI-09.
also suggested, Radial JDX, Aiken gold brick

If you want a good drum mic + room mic + guitar cabinet mic, an LCD might not be the best bet.  A good Chinese made ribbon pair would go farther I think.  Fat Heads w transformer upgrade would be a more versatile contender.

Stick with vocals on an LDC, and get a good one.  Otherwise SDC make better overheads and room mics due to much better transient handling and off axis response, and a good old SM57 on a guitar cabinet is still hard to beat.

    Just my 2 cents

I had only considered using a LDC because I see them used so often on guitar cabs.

    It was just a consideration.

I figured if I was going to consider this, then why not consider multiple uses for the investment.

i think the ADK Hamburg, and then the Vienna, is one of the best low budget values in med. condenser mics around

i have a hamburg, and use it all the time, for just about anything.

a used KSM44, will take you very far

For ribbon I picked up one of the stupid deal of the day - MXL 144 (or 44 - it is the same mic).  If you want a guitar cab mic it is perfect.  Works great in a small dampened (sound, not water-wise) room.  I'm sure you could spend more, but I don't think it will get you much more.  Worked OK as an drum overhead/FOK, too.  Not to keen about it on vocals, but I haven't messed around w/ it much.

Last week or two I got a CAD Trion 8000 tube mic for $200 at B&H.  When I first fooled around w/ it I thought it, in technical terms, sucked.  I am refining my opinion.  You just have to work it pretty hard to get a good sound - it is sensitive and temperamental, but can have quite a quite sharp and defined sound.  I was hoping for smooth, but it is useful.  For the money worth having since I don't have any other Chinese capsule units here at home.

Then there are Oktavas (the other mics I have at home) which are always good to have.  You can find them cheap on ebay - the 219 or 319 LDC.

Some of the cheapo MXL mics get some love from the music store reviews like this one:  http://www.musiciansfriend.com/condenser-microphones/mxl-990-condenser-microphone-with-shockmount?rNtt=mxl%20microphones&index=4

There are lots of options.  One of the best is put some talent in front of the mic!

I already have to AKG C4000B large diaphragm mics that we use for overhead mics on the kit.

I also have that same microphone.  I posed a similar question recently (just a bit down on the page).

Here's the thread.  The microphone I settled on, which is a CAD, is a great option for you to look at.  Toward the bottom of the thread you'll see where I zoomed in on that particular model.
