Will there be a SONAR 2015 demo?
I'm starting to think not. When 2015 was released in January, CW did say the plan was to release a demo sooner after the initial release than they had with previous versions. It's four months later, and still no word about a demo from CW, even though several people on these forums have asked about it. Is CW just assuming that if people want to take it for a test run, they should be willing to pay a month's membership fee? Maybe I'm just being cynical, but why say you're going to release a demo earlier than usual and then go silent about it for months? Thanks- -Susan

Since it reverts to "Demo Mode" anyway, it doesn't make sense that everyone cannot simply download it now.
iZotope let's you demo VERY expensive software for free, and works for 10 days... No muss, no fuss... And they must get good sales from it.
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Hi Michael- I agree. I don't understand why they don't just provide demo downloads for the current version, or why they didn't for even earlier versions, since it reverts, as you say. I guess they have their reasons...? Thanks- -Susan

Hi Susan, based on reading about the simple manual for the new Rapture Pro it seems a concern for piracy... Something that requires serious attention in an appropriate manner. There are already several methods in use much more efficient that do not affect legitimate sales.
Ironically, someone can load their SONAR on a friend's computer, yet the concern for this seems nonexistent. If a company wishes to attack piracy, then attack piracy, not customers. Criminals will exploit every loophole you allow.

Which release do they make the demo for? The current one? That's a moving target every month as features are added.

Aren't most of the new added features not part of the demo. I thought the demo was just a base version, lower than the Artist version. Though it would contain up to date fixes for the parts it does contain. Frion the CCC this would be just the header download.

It would seem to make sense to just make the current Artist version available for free download, reverting to demo mode at the end of some period of time. Presonus seems to do this in a particularly cool way - they have a basic free version of Studio One, which you can download and use to your heart's content, but you can start a 30-day demo of the full Professional version at any time, which will revert back to free mode if they haven't convinced you by then - "start free, then go pro"...

As the reverting to demo mode exists in the core program (all iterations), I am not sure this is overly relevant. Seeing as you had yours revert to demo mode, did you have to reinstall Braintree to get it back? As it stands today, if someone pays X dollars for a month, they can download (the current revision) and it reverts to demo mode. I cannot think of a single instance of potential customers being charged to demo software.

I didn't actually do anything. The fix came from Cakewalk somehow. I guess through CCC that registered the program correctly.
I get the point about demo mode. It would Be great if it was that easy but I've heard what Andrew and Noel said about having to create adenosine wasn't as easy as we think and there was quite a bit of work involved. I'm no programmer so haven't a clue really.

I can see the reasons for not having a demo, but what I don't get is why Cakewalk made a point of saying they hoped they would release a demo earlier than with previous versions and then go totally silent on it. In this post, they said they hoped to release it on day 1. -Susan

There's obviously a mad scientist at Cakewalk. Haha Predictive text has gone mad and I didn't check. I think from the context it should read: .......having to create 'a demo' wasn't as.............. I haven't edited the original error as it would make all subsequent quotes look even sillier.

You could try Cubase or ProTools - they both demand a dongle to demo. That's $20-$30 right there, if you don't already have them. You can run Cubase Elements trial though - without any dongle. My thinking is - if you're not ready to spend $10 to run for a month, you are not that interested anyway. And after that it's reverting to demo mode - don't know for how long, if restricted at all - but you can demo all you want even after that, in a similar fashion as all demos do(except Reaper then, that never expires). I think the demo debate has lost all proportions. Good that Cakewalk put all efforts to provide updates on a regular basis. Not spend rediculous amount of effort on making all shipped plugins revert and similar things. No matter what they do - they will not please everybody...

If you don't release it as a Demo version, it can't revert to the Demo version. At the moment it must revert to something else.
