A German tourist just asked me for directions to Central Perk

She was outside the Grove St building where they took the outside shot of the apartment building in Friends. It's a Mecca for starry eyed Friends fans. "Excuse me...the cafe....Central Perk...where can we find this?"

I cannot believe that someone wouldn't recognize it was a studio set. I pointed her due West, toward L.A.

Wow, you know I've never been to NYC but if I get there I really don't think Central Park will be on my list. I'd like to go to Times Square, see a good play, if the old Fillmore is still there I'd like to see that. Maybe get a good bagel and a good Reuben sandwich and of course say hello to Sharke... oh and Kramer.

The Carnegie Deli is indeed fantastic, however the building does have a macabre recent history because there was a mass murder in one of the apartments upstairs, maybe 2001 or so. A young lady lived there who sold weed, I believe she was one of the actresses in Dirty Dancing. Anyway she had a few friends over to make purchases and there was a knock on the door. A couple of hoodlums who she knew forced their way in with the intention of robbing her, and one of them ended up shooting her dead as she was complying. So of course being the nasty thugs that they were, they decided everyone had to die. They lined them all up against the wall and shot them all in the head. 4 died and one survived to give the deets to the police. Of course they caught the guys and jailed them. I always think of that incident whenever I walk past there.

Yes. But the obvious studio set could be a replica of the real thing...

My son and his wife visited NY the other year and they checked every "as seen on TV series" door knob and entrance and diner they could find there :o/

I've ate at Dunhill cafe and the Cranberry cafe. Tony's Dinapoli was very good although we heard a comment from one of the regulars asking "how did the tourist find out about this place?" The pizza place above the Ed Sullivan theater was okay. I would like to try the Russian tea room too. We spent a few nights in the Hotel St. James which was in the Tom Hanks movie "Big". I think every inch of NYC has been in some movie or show. They even have Woody Allen movie set tours. I told my wife I wanted to go set on the bench by the Queensboro bridge (famous for the scene in "Manhattan") and found out it was just a prop...bummer.

My local Home Depot on 23rd st used to have a plaque on the wall commemorating that the spot next to the registers was where they filmed the scene in Big where Hanks and Robert Loggia play the giant floor piano with their feet. Kind of interesting to think about when you're in line to purchase a toilet seat.

"Central Perk" is what Sharke is talking about. A fictional coffee shop in the sitcom "Friends".
I love NYC. I wouldn't want to live there, but it's a great place to visit. My family had a blast the whole time.

Hahaha! We had heard horror stories about the Hotel St. James, but my wife is cheap so....It wasn't to bad. They had remodeled the bathrooms and I like the old vibe and character of the place. Plus it's 100 yards from Time Square.

I've been to Paris and London, but not New York.  Personally, they all are too crowded and dirty.  Some of the smaller cities tend to be the best to visit in my opinion.

Personally I can't imagine living anywhere else. I know there are some very pleasant places to live but to me they're nice for a day or two before I start going nuts with the endless peace and quiet and slow pace. I have a friend who lives upstate, it's beautiful enough and he has a great house but they have to drive for 45 minutes to do a grocery shop or eat out.

You get used to the crowds and bustle in New York. It's like every other big city, there are tourist traps and you know to avoid them. Elsewhere, there is a colorful liveliness which prohibits so much as a minute of boredom. I step out of my apartment and there's people playing music on the streets, marching bands, street performers, theater in the parks, protests, parades, magicians, a million dogs to pet and all manner of general eye catching craziness. I can buy anything at almost any time of day on every day of the week and nothing is more than a couple of subway stops away. I've probably got about 20 restaurants within a 2 block radius alone. I frequently stumble onto movie sets, see famous people all the time, and on any night of the week I can go see some of world's finest musicians perform small, intimate gigs.

When it gets to the point where I'm napping in the afternoon, maybe I'll move somewhere quieter and less exciting.

To be fair, the Soup Nazi does exist but he calls himself the Soup Man (naturally, I don't think you'd get away with "Nazi" in a business name ).

The biggest mistake a German tourist can make is to ask for directions to the old city center in Rotterdam (which the nazis completely destroyed in 1940).
