Starlight in the Sky - new version 4/22 evening

I've redone this one from a few years ago.  I did the instrumental and Robby wrote and sang lyrics for it.  At that time the intro was way too long for the song, so I've cut that out.  Hopefully I didn't screw everything else up. Critique welcome. Thanks!

Added reverb on the vocal and turned up the bass a bit.  Better?

    Made me go, "awwww..."

    Short and sweet

It stands up on its own with just piano and vocals, but I thought I could hear a bass line running through it. Perhaps the bass could be brought up in the mix a bit? Not much... It certainly would do the vocals any harm, I don't think, because they are quite prominent anyway.

I'd also be tempted to but ever such a hint of reverb on the vocals. Just the merest hint though...

    cheers

Whoa! I'm no expert really and I was hoping that a few others, more adept than me, would have chipped in by now

So I'd wait until you get a few more opinions...

YOU'RE no expert?  Well, meet ME!  lol  I wondered about those vocals, but I know they're supposed to be prominent.  Your comment just helped me decide.  And I want the bass to be heard...just never know exactly how it comes across.  Anyway, we'll see what others say too.  Thanks again. :)

This is a beautiful song, Janet.  I agree with Andy about putting a touch of reverb on the the vocal because the strings are somewhat ambient, and that would make the vocal and strings sound like they are in the same environment.  Otherwise, this is a gem.

Well, I hadn't run the vox through the reverb bus at all.  Hmm...  Anyway, I made some changes.  Hopefully for the better!

Vocals are pretty pro, nice ballad.

For me, the bass was too hot. I'd back it off a bit, and I think it might be overcompressed? over limited? I know you want that nice loooong bass sustain, but it also accentuates the finger movement of the initial attack.

My guess is, 99% of people wont care about the bass, sustain, compression - they'll just think "what a pretty song!" which it most certainly is.

    cheers,

OK, I went too far with it. Thanks for the feedback.  (I'm rather tickled that I even half understand what you mean about overcompressed...even though it may take me a while to dial it in better.   If everyone knew where I was 6 years ago with this stuff...."What?  It needs a bass?  What for?"  Ah...gratifying, even though I've still got a looong way to go.)   Anyway, thanks again. Much appreciated!

Well done, Janet! I agree with emeraldsoul about the bass. Either pull it back or make it more interesting (e.g. go out and hire a great bass player :).

If it was my mix, I'd next work on the vocal EQ. There's a bite there that isn't needed for this kind of tune. I'm guessing this was a bright condenser, maybe an NT-1A or something like that. Try a broad dip around 3KHz.

Just don't touch the piano. It's the best part, as usual.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Janet, I think this sounds better, though I would bring the bass down enough that it's not louder than the piano.  The vocal sounds good to my ears whether you take Dave's advice or not.  You're almost there.

Hi janet- You already got some great mix advice, so I'll just say how pretty the song was.  Well played by you and well sung by Robby.  It was good to hear his voice again.  Where is he these days?

Thanks Bit! Nice of you to stop by!  I believe I may have a real live (and good!) bass player willing to help me out on this, so stand by.  :) Thanks for the tips on the vocals.  I'll try that.  I do appreciate the kudos. :)

Lynn...thanks.  Drat it...too loud, huh?  Well, I'll try to address that when I get a new (real!) bass part in it.  Thanks so much!

Thank you very much, Phil!  I guess he's still where he's always been.  Maybe a new forum name?

    Hi Janet,

Are you still working on this piece then? The version I can hear now certainly has a more prominent bass track, for sure. But by the comments made here, I guess you are going to work on the bass further.

Also, the version I just played as a prominent click, or glitch at 11 seconds in. I played it a couple of times, just to make sure that is wasn't my laptop, but it's definitely there.

    cheers

Love the piano and strings Janet.  I heard the pop at 0:11 also, but is it really a pop or is it a hard hit on the bass guitar part that brings out a pop?  Agree with Bitflipper about vocal EQ...maybe "smooth" it out a tad.

I listened on computer speakers and can't really judge the bass volume on this one....but I had no trouble hearing it.

Thanks for sharing!  Very nice tune BTW!

    Cheers!

Really nice song Janet.  Robby sang it great and your playing is really good. The bass is too loud and compressed. Bring it way back so you can still hear it but make the focus the vocal and keys.  Strings are very well done. All and all, you have a special song here.
If you are going to re-mix, listen to this for a few times for some perspective:

Thank you SO much for listening and commenting!  I'm not sure what happened with that base... or the whole mix for that matter.  Anyway, we may hear a REAL bass on this before long, so stay tuned. Thanks again.  I do appreciate it and hope you're doing well!

Hi Janet, Long time!! Hope you are well and the family is good. This piece sound nice, but like everyone is saying, the bass is way up front and needs to be dropped back into the mix. Listen to it again but turn the sound click player volume to 50 and you will see a bit clearer what needs to be adjusted so you can tweak each track in and out for better balance. Just try to keep the panning correct and don't share track space and it will all come together.

A very lovely and beautiful song. I do tend to remember this piece from last year or so, and now it is beginning to come full circle. Congrats to you and Robbie on a beautiful love song. It will touch many hearts.
