Is it That Time Already?

I reach my companies official retirement age later this year, but I had always hoped to stay a year or two longer. Now I am going to have to go a few months early. Of course I am so much more fortunate than the legions of younger people being made redundant in the bloodbath that is going on in the oil sector due to the collapse in oil prices.

For 35 years I have lead a compartmentalized life working away from home in various countries for one or two months then, effectively taking all the weekends in a block at home, I am enjoying the life style now work is in Dubai. Its going to a real lifestyle change. Strangely I find the prospect frightening. I am not worried about filling my time and I should be reasonably secure financially but I just don't feel old enough at 60.

Hey...  I just hit that last year... 60.... kind of eye opening... really? I'm here already? Where did the time go?

Then you drag out the photo albums and realize that, yeah, it's true.... it's been a long crazy ride at times.

Enjoy the retirement years.... I'm not retired yet, but some folks I know personally who are tell me they work harder in retirement than they did when they were working 9-5.....

With a good hobby to keep you busy and a nest egg so you can pay some bills and eat on a regular basis..... seems like a good time to set back on the porch and play with the grand babies and other such things.....

Enjoy your retirement... I certainly am enjoying mine!!!  Think of it as a new chapter and opportunities to do the things you never had time for.  I got out early..at 53, and am 60 now.   Love it!

Cheers!

I'm not even close to retirement age but when the time does come, an important thing to me would be to always keep my mind occupied/challanged. I would want to be doing something productive every day as that's what I'm used to doing and I certainly wouldn't want that to be taken away from me......it would drive me crazy.

Best of luck Glyn with your retirement. Will you be living in Dubai or live someplace else?

I will be back in the UK which is home and where I spend most of my off time.

I'm 61 and I wish I could have retired long time ago, but due to financial reasons I'll have to work at least four years more. There are so many interesting things to do and none of them is in any way related to my now 38 year long working "career".

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hi Glynn you of course will not be retired when you come back to the UK because, like me, you are on of the lucky ones who instead of retiring at 65 like we was told you will now have to wait until you are 66 or even 67.

Enjoy it while you can.

If I had enough money to be financially stable the rest of my life, I'd retire in a heartbeat!  I'm about to turn 52 and I'd LOVE to be able to retire early.  but I don't see that happening until I'm at least 62.  maybe longer.

I get what you mean Glyn. I'm 55 this year and I know that in 5 years time I'll still feel too young to be retiring...which is good, 'cos there NO chance that's going to happen!

Where is your company incorporated? In the US this mandatory retirement age would probably run afoul of The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA).

I am in a very fortunate position compared to many people and will be retiring with a decent pension. I am sure I will adjust, I think the issue is more accepting that I have reached that age.

With the oil price collapse things ar brutal in the industry. In many ways it's a good time to be getting out.

Just a couple of days to go now before I leave, its quite surreal.

Traveling around Dubai and seeing the familiar cityscape and knowing I will be leaving, maybe never to return.

Saying goodbye to friends and colleagues from all the continents except Antarctica. (I probably should have gone and seen the penguins at Ski Dubai to complete the set.) Its going to be a bigger change than just not going to the office.

It creeps up on you. I can remember thinking that people in their 30's were old, then I got there . . . people always said when you hit the 40's it's the start of the downhill run, your eye sight starts to go, yeah right, not long after I turned 40, maybe 44/45, I noticed it, the eye's indeed were dimming, just a little, but enough to notice. Then came 50, and now half way to 52. Don't feel old and decrepit, still feel young, but I can remember thinking how old those over 50's looked. Meet people I knew when younger, back in the school years, and man some of them really do look old, like they got one foot in the grave, hard to believe some of them are the same age.

Anyway what can you do, enjoy it if you are fit and healthy, and remember it's never to late.

Well, that's it! Handed in my work phone, laptop, ID cards etc. A few last drinks with (ex)colleagues tonight and fly I back to the UK tomorrow.

As Dave Cousins wrote ("On Growing Older" from Grave New World)

"If some times I feel in retrospect,
A regret for the waste of my youth,
I cause to reflect that I still have time,
Before growing old in the tooth,
To achieve all the things I should have achieved,
When Idleness led me astray
And being aware of what I have missed,
I am extending my use of the day"

Sounds better than.
"Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way"
Sorry Roger.
