I have a similar situation; but I'm using a Midi controller keyboard called "Quick Shot" Midi Controller.
It has a Midi Out port, a game port, a headphone jack and a power connector jack.
I have a very old Cakewalk 2.0 (with a 3.0 sequencing engine) loaded on my old Windows Vista tower.
The sound card it has is the typical on-the-motherboard 3 mini jack ports and 4 USB ports in back
and 2 mini jack ports on the front of the tower; which also has two USB ports.
Since the Quick Shot is NOT a synth, it cannot playback sound through itself. It does not have a Midi IN port.
All it does is send Midi controller data OUT. Here is what I have done:
I connected my Mio 1 in 1 out USB to the midi (white) connector on the keyboard, then the Mio USB connector to my computer. I load Cakewalk 2.0, and open the Settings and then Midi Devices.
On the left side Mio is listed as an Input, by itself.
On the right side, Mio is listed along with a Microsoft Midi Mapper and
a Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, as Outputs.
I cannot select any outputs other than Mio.
Neither the GS Synth nor the Midi Mapper are allowed to load, and an error message says
that either one is "already in use".
I open a new Cakewalk file and click the "Rec" button and start recording.
I play several keys on the keyboard making sure to play a pattern that is unique enough
for me to remember. There is NO SOUND coming from my computer, and I can't see any activity
that indicates I am recording anything in the new Cakewalk file.
I press stop, save the "untitled" file as some 8 digit name, disconnect the Mio from the USB port,
and Exit Cakewalk.
Then I reopen Cakewalk again, open the file I saved, open Midi Devices and select Midi Mapper or GS Synth
as the output device. I do not reconnect mio, and there is no input device connected or listed.
Now I press the "Play" button for the file in cake walk, and I can hear the unique pattern I played previously!
So...my obvious questions are: Is Mio blocking the external output of the sound card in my computer?
OR...is the version of Cakewalk 2.0 unable to correctly interface with the Mio device for output in Real time?
Since I'm relying solely on my computer sound card to generate the synth sound, and I'm sending the correct controllers to the card via Mio; I don't understand why I can't hear OR see the recording occur in Real time.
Please help an old Geek of the ancient computer past to understand what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you sincerely for your reply.
