Goofing off with Kontakt and Sonar, untitled

Still a bit rough.   Percussion needs some work, etc.

Very nice piece here Greg. You might need an additional melody line during the arpeggio section after the first repeat, just to keep it moving forward. I think the finished piece will be very good.

Look out, this is a contender. Total epic soundtrack city.

Some of your big tympani hits might need a bit less volume, they had a bit of breakup in them.

    really nice!

For a WIP piece this sounds great. This piece could easily be ten minutes long or more...

I liked this as well. Sounded very nice so, would like to hear an extended version. :)

To me the Timpani could use some more base/punch. But this could very well be that I heard this through regular earphones.

I think you're off to a good start, but the piece seems incomplete at this point.  You received some excellent advice above.  I would like to hear this when it's done.

I like overall feeling and sound mix. It sounds like its ready for the next movement to start. I agree with you that the drums need work perhaps more sophisticated/developed percussion at intervals. Enjoyed very much, thanks for sharing.

This can be very nice if you add some melody lines. Relaxing :-)

Re: Goofing off with Kontakt and Sonar, untitled 2015/05/03 08:50:38 (permalink)
I had some time yesterday to compulsively re-edit everything completed so far and to incorporate some you your suggestions.  In particular, the repeat of the melodic middle part did get some additional melody lines and orchestration changes.

And I did add a bit more percussion and remix it a bit.  The first percussion that was in there was mostly a delayed, distorted, auto-panned kit from Heavocity's Master Ensembles.  I re-edited a lot of that and added some Apocalypse  kit (mostly rim hits except for the toms mid way through and the snare that is mixed in more often).

It still weighs in at only 2:14, and I agree that it could probably be extended, but that sounds like a lot of work ;)
So it is still just a draft in A-B-B-A form (yeah, it could get bigger if I played around with voicing/instrumentation and did something like A-B-B-A-B-B-C .... like a pop song, eh.. verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge.. lol).

Anyway, I think I got the gist of some of the suggestions and have incorporated some of them, and now have a template for a much longer piece if I ever get especially ambitious, I think?
