Steinberg UR44

Just upgraded my Roland Quad capture and picked up the UR44. Great piece of gear for the hobbyist. 6 ins and 6 outs with controls for main volume and 2 independent headphone outs. It's really a Yamaha interface, and I didn't even know they made an interface.

It also includes a light version of Cubase 8 and a hand full of plugin's. The plugin's work  very well in Sonar and as a bonus there is some kind of link between the interface and plugin's. There's a dedicated DSP so that you can run the plugs while tracking with no latency. Reverb, EQ and compression are all available in the headphones while tracking. Could be useful.

So far the only drag is that to get the software and use the interface it all has to be registered. It was a somewhat convoluted process and full of Steinberg intrusiveness. For $300 weak Canadian dollars it was a great buy.

I have been using the UR44 for about a year now. It is really a great interface. Lots of options. I can create a separate headphone mix from the main out, play live guitars to YouTube videos, record voice while capturing live video from my desktop, re-amp using one of the extra outputs, record up to 192kHz (but I don't), and lots more. It will interface with PC, Mac, and iPad.

Here is a list of features:

Steinberg UR44 USB Audio Interface Features:
    • An excellent 6-in/4-out, 24-bit/192kHz USB 2.0 recording interface for your Mac, PC, or iPad
    • I/O includes 4 Class A D-PRE preamps with phantom power and 2 x instrument inputs
    • Onboard DSP provides latency-free monitor mixing and monitoring with effects and processing
    • Pugged full-metal chassis provides the durability you need to take your recording rig on the road
    • Bundled with Steinberg's Basic FX Suite VST 3 plug-ins
    • iOS compliant (with the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit),

I've had a day to work with this interface and I can't be happier. This is the sort of thing I was hoping to see from Tascam/Gibson/Cakewalk. It works with my other DAW stuff just fine but it will integrate with Cubase on a tighter level.

In addition to being an interface, the software includes a DSP that gives you the ability to run the included plugin's while tracking and provides a mixer so that you can run different mixes directly to the outputs or headphone busses. The VST version of the plugin's give you most of the same functions but don't integrate to Cubase. You also get Yamaha amp models that remind me of the DG series that they made way back. Clean, Crunch, Drive & Lead.

So you get the interface, Plugins for Reverb, Channel strip, Comp and EQ and 4 amp models for around $300 CDN.

Come on Gibson/Tascam/Cakewalk, this is where you need to go.
