Theremin - Resolved by Free Download

Anyone know a good Theremin-esque VST for Sonar?  I need to emulate a Theremin type sound for a song.  (Think "Good Vibrations.")

Paid or free is fine as long as it doesn't break anything.  Wavelore makes one but I've had bad luck with them and have read some complaints about their failure to send links after collecting payment.  I hope that is just a misunderstanding.

I have the full Kontakt player so something for that would be fine.

Thanks.

PS I MIGHT be able to fake it with a Minimoog but it wouldn't be the same.

I think I included one in one of my expansion packs...used a lot of portamento and mod wheel.

When I download Spook Keys and unzip, all that is there is a dll.  Not sure what to do with that.  The demo sounds great, but not sure how to install it.

Chuck the DLL file into your VST folder, open up Sonar.  Rescan your VST folder(s) (if it did not do it on load) and verify that it found one new synth and the synth should be available to use.

FxPansion used to do a free one too - not sure if they still make it available (called Mysteron or Enigmatron IIRC).

I have Sonicouture's Ondes Martenot, and it is capable of making a pretty convincing Theremin sound. It's not a Theremin, but it can sound quite close.  In fact on the "8 Best Free Theremin VST" page at the end of the first paragraph where it mentions artists that have used it and they name Radiohead, that is a mistake.  Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead plays the Ondes Martenot, not a Theremin (although knowing him, he probably has played one at some point).

    http://www.soniccouture.com/en/products/24-vintage/g27-ondes/

At least he plays the OM in the studio and a few special shows.  It's a unique, old, and rather fragile instrument.  So he asked Analogue Systems to develop an Ondes style controller to use with his AS Modular system and they produced the French Connection controller for him, which is what he uses on stage these days.

    http://www.analoguesystems.co.uk/index2.htm

If you want to see 4 of them in action, check out this video of Thom and Jonny (joined by Thomas Bloch, as mentioned on the Sonicouture site, and 2 other people) performing How to Disappear Completely

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chE1_g3GAWw

(poor video, but the audio quality is good)

So check it out. The Sonicouture  OM is sweet sounding and can do a lot more than just a Theremin sound.  If you haven't tried any of SC's stuff before, you're in for a pleasant surprise.  They make fantastic sounding instruments.

If you have one of the Roland synths... 1080,2080,5080 etc... maybe some of their other synths too not sure.  There is one of their original patches that does a great job faking it called "Helium Queen".

There's one in Rapture / Rapture LE (if you don't have the full version) called Theremin vox in the leads section.

Thanks, Mark.  I don't know why you thought I wouldn't like your music.  I like a lot of different styles and your track sounds great.  That drum part in the intro would give Dragon Force a good run for it's money: that is some fast playing!

Keep up the good work and thanks for the Theremin tip.

Haha, Bass Daddy!  That's good.  Most of my songs are inspired by real people and this one is based on a 20-something female I know who is a modern version of a hippie.
